Chapter 4 - The Federal Gate

By 7:00 AM, the morning sun was a pale, cold orb struggling to pierce through the heavy fog over the city of Como.
At the private docks behind the Federal Courthouse in downtown Como, a squad of six armed Federal Marshals stood in defensive positions along the stone pier, their submachine guns raised, watching a battered wooden rowing skiff emerge from the mist.
"Halt!" the lead Marshal shouted, his voice echoing across the water. "Identify yourselves immediately!"
In the middle of the boat, I set the oars down, my arms trembling with intense exhaustion, my hands raw and blistered from two hours of continuous rowing across two miles of open water.
In the stern of the boat sat Lorenzo Duca, his coat draped over his shivering shoulders, his hands firmly clutching the small aluminum reel-to-reel tape spool against his chest.
And in his lap sat Emma, fast asleep, her small head resting trustingly against the mob boss’s bandaged ribs.
Lorenzo raised his head, his voice booming across the water with absolute, undeniable authority.
"I am Lorenzo Duca," he called out. "I am here to see Federal Prosecutor David Vance. Tell him I have brought him the entire Duca syndicate on a silver platter."
Ten minutes later, we were escorted into a high-security conference room on the fourth floor of the Federal Building.
David Vance—a tall, sharp-eyed prosecutor in his late fifties with graying hair and a reputation for absolute integrity—sat at the head of a long mahogany table, flanked by two senior federal agents.
A vintage audio player had been brought into the room.
The agent threaded Lorenzo’s magnetic tape through the metal heads and pressed the play button.
The quiet, tense room was instantly filled with the crystal-clear, unedited voice of Donna Beatrice Duca:
“Oh, Lorenzo... Did you really think your father built this storm room without giving me the master monitoring codes?... Matteo is currently sitting in a holding cell... You are bleeding out in a ditch... The board of directors will unanimously vote me as the sole managing director... Enjoy my father-in-law's cellar, Lorenzo. It will make a lovely final resting place.”
The tape ended with a sharp static pop.
Prosecutor Vance leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, profound look of triumph settling across his face.
"This is an unprompted, fully detailed confession of corporate fraud, police corruption, and attempted murder," Vance declared, looking up at Lorenzo. "It clears your cousin Matteo completely, and it gives us full authority to issue an immediate federal arrest warrant for Beatrice Duca and her entire security team."
Lorenzo nodded slowly, leaning his back against his chair. "Do it now. Before she attempts to flee the country."
Vance stood up, turning his gaze toward me and Emma, who was sitting on my lap eating a warm croissant that a young secretary had brought her.
"And who is this young lady?" Vance asked, his eyes warming as he looked at the flour-dusted maid in her soaked wool coat.
"This is Clara Hayes," Lorenzo stated, his voice filled with an intense, fierce pride. "She saved my life, stitched my wounds, rowed me across two miles of open water, and preserved the evidence that brought down a criminal empire."
Prosecutor Vance looked at me with profound respect, bowing his head slightly. "Mrs. Hayes... this city owes you a debt it can never fully repay."

I looked down at Emma, who held up her small plastic thermometer and smiled up at the federal prosecutor.
"We just wanted to fix his bear bandage," Emma said innocently.
