Chapter 6 - The Shadows Retreat

For the next three weeks, Chicago’s underworld held its breath.
The expected gang war never happened. Instead, Adrian dismantled the corrupt factions of the syndicate with surgical precision. Rivals who tried to test his weakness found themselves cut off from supply lines and facing an aggressive, unified police and corporate retaliation that dismantled their operations overnight.
Grant Mercer, the North Side boss who had originally been blamed for the ambush, sent a formal emissary to the estate offering a non-aggression pact.
Adrian accepted it with a single condition: Stay out of my territory.
The city returned to a fragile, enforced peace. But inside the limestone fortress on Lake Shore Drive, something much more important was happening.
The house was filling up with life.
On a bright Tuesday afternoon, a moving truck pulled up to the estate gates. Grace Miller and her daughter Emma stepped out, followed by a car carrying a very sleepy three-year-old girl.
Adrian stood on the front steps, waiting for them.
Lily wore a yellow sundress, her dark curls tied back with a pink ribbon. When she saw him, she broke away from Grace and ran across the stone patio.
“Daddy!”
Adrian dropped to one knee, catching her in his arms and spinning her around as she laughed with unadulterated joy.
Grace walked up slowly, holding Emma’s hand.
“Mr. Vale... are you sure about this?” Grace asked, looking up at the massive mansion. “Moving us here... I’m just a housekeeper.”
“You’re family, Grace,” Adrian said, setting Lily down and standing up. “You kept my daughter alive when everyone else thought she was gone. From now on, this is your home, too.”

Grace smiled through sudden tears. “Thank you, Mr. Vale.”
“Call me Adrian.”
