Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Bellweather House

The ghostly silhouette vanished into the freezing air as quickly as it had appeared, leaving behind only the faint, lingering scent of summer rain and the rhythmic ticking of the vault's climate control units.

Vance lowered his firearm slowly, his eyes wide with a mixture of disbelief and profound shock as he stared at the empty space beside the sofa. He looked over at Nathaniel, who was still kneeling on the concrete floor, his hands trembling as he clutched the pale blue sapphire ring in his fist.

“Boss...” Vance started, his voice uncharacteristically shaken. “Tell me you saw that.”

Nathaniel didn't answer immediately. He pushed himself back to his feet, every muscle in his body rigid, his grief entirely replaced by a cold, murderous clarity.

“She isn't dead,” Nathaniel said, his voice dropping into a register that made Vance take an instinctive step back.

Vance frowned, shaking his head. “Boss, the coroner’s report from five years ago—we saw the dental records, the DNA match from the vehicle fire—”

“The vehicle fire was staged, Vance,” Nathaniel interrupted, slamming his palm down onto the terminal console. The monitors flashed erratically under the force of the blow. “Look at the property files. Bellweather House wasn't just a front for illegal adoptions; it was a black-site proxy network backed by half the state legislature and corporate elite who wanted to bury their secrets. Elizabeth didn't die in that crash on Interstate 91. She uncovered something she shouldn't have, they ran her off the road, and they took Grace.”

Maria rushed over from the sofa, her face white with terror as she pulled Lily closer into her arms. The little girl stirred slightly in her sleep, murmuring something unintelligible before settling back down.

“Mr. Cole... are you saying... are you saying Grace might still be alive?” Maria whispered, her voice trembling.

Nathaniel looked at Maria, then down at the sapphire ring in his palm.

“Elizabeth didn't lead Lily into my study tonight just to return a ring,” Nathaniel said, his eyes blazing with absolute determination. “She brought her because Lily can see what we’re too blind to look at. And she left me a message: Find our daughter.”

He turned back to the terminal, his fingers flying across the keyboard with cold, calculated precision.

“Vance, wake up the entire security detail. I want every private jet fueled, every encrypted server decrypted, and every asset we have in the Midwest mobilized within the hour.”

“Where are we going, boss?” Vance asked, already reaching for his satellite phone.

“To the Evanston estate,” Nathaniel said, pulling his heavy wool overcoat back over his shoulders. “To Bellweather House. We’re going to tear that foundation apart brick by brick until we find out where they buried the truth.”
