The first sound six-year-old Lily heard wasn’t the crash.
It was the breath that came afterward.
A thin, torn gasp slipped through the brass vent above the laundry room, pulling her upright from the blankets where her mother had hidden her.
“Stay here,” Elena had whispered. “No matter what you hear.”
But Lily knew that sound.
She had heard it in her own chest on winter nights, when her mother counted seconds beside her bed and pretended not to be scared.
Another broken gasp came through the vent.
Then silence.
Lily closed her hand around the red rescue inhaler in her coat pocket and stepped into the corridor.
She climbed the servants’ staircase, passed a row of dark family portraits, and followed the sound to a half-open library door.
A man lay beside the desk.
Broken glass glittered around him. One hand clawed weakly at his collar. His lips were turning gray.
Beside his fingers rested a silver inhaler.
Lily picked it up.
A drop of clear moisture shone around the mouthpiece. When she lifted it closer, a sharp, bitter smell stung her nose.
It didn’t smell like medicine.
The man’s body jerked as he fought for air.
Lily looked at the silver inhaler.
Then at the red one in her own hand.
It was her last rescue inhaler. The refill was waiting at the pharmacy, but her mother hadn’t been able to pay for it yet. Until Friday, this was the only thing standing between Lily and an emergency room.
The stranger reached toward her, but his hand collapsed against the carpet.
Lily dropped to her knees.
“This one is mine,” she whispered, wrapping his trembling fingers around the red inhaler. “It’s safe.”
Then she began to count.
His hand shook too badly to lift it.
So Lily guided the inhaler toward his mouth herself.
“One… two… three…”
