Chapter 5 - The Rebuilding of an Empire

By Tuesday afternoon, the scandal had completely inverted.

Instead of the Blackwood empire collapsing under the weight of a federal investigation, the press was having a field day exposing Arthur Hale’s corrupt municipal land grab. By Tuesday evening, Arthur had resigned from his firm, and the state attorney general had opened a formal corruption probe into his entire political network.

Inside the Blackwood estate, the storm had passed, leaving behind a profound, restorative quiet.

At 6:00 PM, Ivy sat at her desk in the estate administrative office, reviewing the catering schedules for the upcoming autumn charity gala.

The door swung open quietly.

Ronan walked in, carrying two mugs of black coffee. He set one down on the corner of her desk without a word, pulling up a chair and sitting across from her.

“You’ve been working for fourteen hours straight, Ivy,” Ronan said, his slate-gray eyes softening as he studied her face. “Take a break.”

Ivy looked up from her monitor, taking a sip of the coffee. “Someone has to keep this house running, Mr. Blackwood. Especially now that half the administrative staff is still recovering from the weekend drama.”

“I told you to stop calling me that,” he murmured, leaning forward, resting his elbows on her desk.

“Habit,” she replied, though a small smile tugged at the corner of her mouth.

“Drop the habit.” Ronan reached across the desk, his warm fingers brushing against the back of her hand where it rested on the mouse pad. He didn't pull away, and neither did she. “Vivienne is entirely out of the picture. Her family is bankrupt, her father is facing indictment, and she’s currently on a flight back to her aunt’s estate in Geneva.”

“You didn't have to destroy them completely, Ronan,” Ivy noted softly.

“They tried to destroy what belongs to me,” he answered instantly, his voice leaving no room for argument.

Ivy looked down at their joined hands. The memory of the riding crop and the blood on her uniform still lingered, but the fear was gone, replaced by a strange, terrifying sense of finality.

“Why did you come back early, Ronan?” she asked, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Really. Beyond the shipping delays.”

Ronan looked into her eyes, the hard, impenetrable armor of the mafia boss melting away entirely, leaving only the man beneath.

“Because I couldn't sleep in London,” he confessed, his voice rough and honest. “Every time I closed my eyes, I realized I was letting a stranger wear a ring that belonged on your hand. I came home because I realized that building an empire means nothing if you don't have the one person standing beside you who knows the truth of who you are.”

Ivy’s breath hitched. She looked at him—the man feared by half the country, the predator who tore down corrupt politicians without blinking—and saw the vulnerability he reserved for her alone.

“You’re an impossible man, Ronan Blackwood,” she whispered, her eyes shining.

“And you’re the only woman who’s ever had the courage to tell me the truth,” he replied softly.

He stood up, walking around the desk until he stood right beside her chair. He didn't wait for permission this time. He gently pulled her to her feet, his arms wrapping securely around her waist, drawing her against him with a fierce, possessive tenderness.

Ivy rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady, powerful beat of his heart.

The storm had broken, the wolves had been driven away, and for the first time in three years, the Blackwood estate finally felt like home.
