Part 2: The Crimson Corridor

The fluorescent lights of the pediatric wing flickered violently as another burst of gunfire shattered the heavy silence of the corridor. Outside Room 412, the world was dissolving into chaotic violence, but inside the small, blue-gilded room, Gabriel Moretti stood completely frozen, his eyes locked onto Elena Cruz.
She was still holding the broken mop handle, her knuckles white, her breathing ragged. She didn't look like a savior; she looked like a survivor pushing past the absolute limit of human endurance.
"Vincent," Gabriel commanded, his voice dropping to a terrifyingly low, vibrating frequency that made the glass panels of the hospital windows hum. "Keep that door covered. Anyone who steps through without my voice gets a bullet between their eyes."
"On it, Boss," Vincent Kane growled, his massive frame instantly taking up the threshold, his tactical weapon raised, his eyes scanning the smoke-filled hallway.
Gabriel stepped toward the bed, his polished leather shoes crunching over the fragments of shattered plastic from the medical tray Elena had used as a shield. As he approached, Elena didn't step back. Her defensive stance tightened, the jagged wooden point of the mop handle hovering just inches from Gabriel’s immaculate silk tie.
"I told you," she wheezed, blood dripping from her split eyebrow onto the white linoleum floor. "Don't touch him."
"He is my son," Gabriel said softly. For the first time in fifteen years, the absolute ruler of Manhattan’s criminal underworld felt a lump form in his throat. He lowered his Glock entirely, showing his open palms to the cleaning lady. "Look at his face, Elena. Look at my face. I am Gabriel Moretti. I am his father."
Elena’s eyes darted from Gabriel’s sharp, aristocratic features to the small, pale face of six-year-old Daniel resting beneath the oxygen mask. The resemblance was undeniable—the same dark, curly hair, the same high cheekbones, the same long lashes. Slowly, the adrenaline that had kept her spine straight began to drain away. Her hands trembled violently, and the broken mop handle slipped from her grip, clattering loudly against the floor.
She stumbled backward, her knees giving out, but Gabriel caught her by the upper arms before she could hit the ground. The fabric of her blue uniform was soaked through with warm, sticky blood from her shoulder wound.
"You're hit," Gabriel muttered, his cold eyes scanning her injuries with a professional, calculating gaze.
"One of them... had a knife," Elena whispered, her face turning an ash-gray color as the shock finally set in. "I shoved the heavy linen cart into him... but he caught me before I could lock the deadbolt. He's... he's still out there, Mr. Moretti. They want your boy."
"They won't touch him again," Gabriel vowed, his voice cutting through the sterile room like an iron blade. He lifted Elena effortlessly, placing her into the armchair beside Daniel's bed. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a pristine white silk handkerchief, and pressed it firmly against the wound on her shoulder. "Hold this. Keep pressure on it. You saved my blood tonight, Elena Cruz. The Moretti family does not forget its debts."
Before Elena could respond, a heavy thud rattled the door frame. Vincent fired two rapid shots into the corridor, followed by the sound of a heavy body collapsing against the wall outside.
"They’re pushing from the west stairwell, Boss!" Vincent shouted over his shoulder, his weapon smoking. "They’ve got submachine guns. This isn't a hit crew; it's a small army. The Brooklyn Vanni family must have aligned with the Marcone syndicate. They knew we were at Le Jardin, and they knew Daniel was brought here."
Gabriel’s face transformed into an expression of pure, unadulterated malice. The Vanni family. The very men he had been sitting across from less than an hour ago, drinking thirty-year-old scotch and talking about shipping territories. It had been a setup. They kept him at the restaurant while their secondary termination squad moved on Lenox Hill Hospital to sever the head of the Moretti empire by destroying his only heir.
"Vincent, get the private elevator override key," Gabriel ordered, stepping over to his son's bed. He carefully checked the medical monitors. Daniel’s heart rate was stabilizing, but the oxygen levels were still dangerously low due to the damaged intake tubes. "We cannot stay here. They control the central power grid; the main elevators are locked down."
"The private service elevator is at the end of the east hall, Boss," Vincent said, reloading his clip with a mechanical, practiced precision. "But the hallway is a kill zone. We have to cross forty yards of open space with a sick kid and a bleeding civilian."
Gabriel looked down at his son, then at Elena, who was clutching the bloody handkerchief to her shoulder, her dark eyes wide with terror but entirely devoid of regret. She had known the risks the moment she interfered, yet she hadn't run.
"Elena," Gabriel said, kneeling in front of her chair so their eyes were at the same level. "Can you walk?"
"I can run if I have to," she said, her voice cracking.
"Good. Because when we step through that door, the world is going to turn into hell. You stay behind me. Do not look back, do not stop for anyone, and do not let go of my jacket." Gabriel stood up, his hand reaching down to disconnect the main monitoring wires from Daniel's bed. He scooped his small, fragile son into his left arm, holding him tightly against his chest, while his right hand brought the Glock back up to eye level.

"Vincent," Gabriel whispered, the darkness in his soul completely taking over. "Clear the path. Kill everything that moves."
The doors of Room 412 swung open, and Gabriel Moretti stepped out into the crimson corridor, ready to paint the hospital walls with the blood of his enemies.
