Chapter 2: The Promise in the Hospital
The operating room doors closed behind Nora.
Vincent Callahan stood outside without moving.
For four hours.
His men waited silently down the hallway. No one dared speak to him.
The nurses whispered among themselves.
"Is that really Vincent Callahan?"
"The one from the news?"
"He hasn't moved."
"No."
"He hasn't even sat down."
Finally, the surgeon emerged.
"The bullet passed through her shoulder. She lost a significant amount of blood, but we were able to repair the damage."
Vincent exhaled for what felt like the first time all night.
"Will she recover?"
"Yes."
"But she'll need therapy."
Vincent nodded once.
"Whatever she needs."
The doctor hesitated.
"There's something else."
"Lily refused to leave."
Vincent looked through the glass window.
His daughter sat beside Nora's bed, holding the waitress's hand with both of hers.
Every time a nurse suggested she rest, Lily shook her head.
"I'm staying with Mom."
The words struck Vincent harder than any bullet ever had.
His wife, Isabella, had died two years earlier during a failed assassination attempt meant for him.
The last thing he had said to her before leaving that morning still haunted him.
"You worry too much."
Those had been his final words.
He never had the chance to say goodbye.
Now another woman had nearly died protecting the person he loved most.
When Nora finally woke, the room was quiet.
Lily had fallen asleep with her head resting beside the bed.
Vincent stood near the window.
"You saved my daughter."
Nora managed a weak smile.
"I'd do it again."
"I know."
He placed an envelope on the bedside table.
"There are five million dollars inside."
Nora frowned.
"I don't want your money."
"It's not payment."
"Then what is it?"
"It's a father trying to repay a debt that cannot be repaid."
She gently pushed the envelope back toward him.
"If you want to thank me..."
She glanced at the sleeping child.
"...give Lily the life she deserves."
Vincent stared at her.
No one had ever refused his money.
No one had ever asked him to become a better man instead.
