Chapter 4 - Dawn Over the Estate

The sun was just beginning to crest the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of amber and rose over the Hamptons estate.

Inside the nursery, the room smelled of fresh rain and lavender.

Lily and Rose were tucked safely into their twin beds, their breathing deep, even, and completely untroubled. No screams. No frantic thrashing. Just the peaceful sleep of children who finally knew they were safe.

Veronica stood by the window, folding a stack of clean cotton sheets, when the heavy oak door of the nursery opened softly.

Rory stepped inside. He had changed out of his wet clothes into a clean dark shirt and trousers. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deeper than they had been twenty-four hours ago, but for the first time since she had met him, his shoulders weren't carrying the weight of an invisible war.

He walked over to the beds, stood quietly between them for a long moment, and gently pulled the blanket up over Rose’s shoulder.

Then he walked over to Veronica.

He placed a heavy, thick manila envelope on the small wooden table beside the rocking chair.

“What’s this?” Veronica asked, looking down at it.

“Your brother’s medical trust,” Rory said simply. “Fully funded for the next ten years, including full-time private physical therapy, home nursing care, and tuition coverage if he decides to go back to college.”

Veronica stared at the envelope, her throat suddenly tight. She reached out, her fingers brushing the stiff paper, feeling the surreal weight of a burden she had carried for five years evaporating into the morning air.

“Mr. Starks... I don't know what to say,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “This is... this is life-changing.”

“No,” Rory corrected, looking her dead in the eye with a rare, quiet respect. “You saved my daughters’ lives. This is merely the down payment on a debt I can never fully repay.”

He turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass knob.

“Pack your things from the staff quarters, Veronica,” he added over his shoulder.

Veronica froze. Her heart skipped a beat. “Sir? Am I... am I fired?”

Rory looked back, a faint, ghost of a smile touching the corner of his lips.

“Fired? Absolutely not. I’m promoting you. Starting today, you’re no longer a maid in this house. You’re head of domestic security and the girls’ personal guardian. I’d trust you with my life before I’d trust half my syndicate.”

Before Veronica could form a reply, Rory pulled the door shut behind him, leaving her alone in the sunlight-flooded nursery.

She looked down at the manila envelope, then over at Lily and Rose, who stirred softly in their sleep, dreaming of fairy tales instead of monsters.

The house was quiet at last. And for the first time in her life, Veronica knew she was exactly where she was meant to be.
