Chapter 1 - The Manhattan Lockout

The heavy steel doors of Bellafonte clicked shut with a chilling, metallic finality.
Inside, the restaurant was completely empty of patrons, stripped of its usual murmurs, clinking crystal, and polite laughter. Only the staff—huddled near the kitchen doors—and Dominic Vale’s armed security detail remained.
Hannah Mercer stood frozen beside the ruined table, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Eighteen months of mourning her father, working sixty-hour weeks, and counting every copper penny had culminated in this: being abducted by the most feared man in the Northeast because his mute twin daughters had looked at her worn-out face and called her Mama.
"Mr. Vale, please," Hannah pleaded, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound composed. "This is insane. I’m a waitress. I have a night shift at the data entry firm in two hours. I don’t know your daughters. I’ve never stepped foot in your estate."
Dominic didn't answer immediately. He stood beside the high chairs, his tall, imposing frame casting a long shadow across the polished wooden floor. His dark eyes flicked from Hannah to the little girls.
Lily, the smallest of the triplets, had stopped crying the moment Hannah stepped closer. She reached out her tiny, chubby hands again, whimpering softly.
“Mama…”
The word tore through the quiet room like a physical blow.
Dominic turned his gaze back to Hannah, the scar over his left eyebrow twitching. "They haven't spoken a single syllable since they were born. Not 'da-da.' Not 'hi.' Not even when their pediatrician pinched their toes." He stepped forward, his leather shoes clicking methodically against the floor. "And yet, the moment you dropped your tray, all three of them looked at you with absolute recognition."
"It’s a coincidence! A fluke!" Hannah insisted, backing away until the back of her legs hit a vacant table. "Babies latch onto sounds. Maybe my voice sounded like a toy or a cartoon they watched!"
"My daughters do not watch television. They live in a secure, controlled environment," Dominic said coldly, stopping just inches away. The scent of expensive cologne, rain, and cold danger washed over her. "Nothing in my life is a coincidence, Miss Mercer. And nobody walks away from this until I have answers."
Before Hannah could protest further, Dominic signaled to his head of security, a hulking man named Marco.
"Pack the girls' things. We're going home."

"You can't just take me!" Hannah gasped, panic finally overriding her shock. "That's kidnapping!"
"It’s an escort," Dominic corrected flatly, turning his back on her as he scooped up little Emma with practiced, effortless ease. "And unless you want to explain to the police why my children refuse to let go of your apron, I suggest you get in the car."
