Chapter 4 - The Dinner at Newport

The Whitlock estate in Newport was a sprawling Victorian fortress built on the cliffs overlooking the sea, its grand windows ablaze with light despite the early hour. Inside the formal dining room, Arthur Whitlock—a heavy-set man with a florid complexion and a sharp, calculating eye—sat at the head of a long mahogany table. Across from him sat Claire, her face still red with a furious, toxic anger, a fresh glass of white wine clutched in her manicured hand.

"He put his jacket on her, Father!" Claire hissed, slamming the glass down onto the wood. "In front of the State Senator. In front of the absolute elite of Providence. He treated that... that pregnant gutter rat as if she were a queen and I were the servant!"

"Calm down, Claire," Arthur said, cutting into a thick piece of rare steak with a silver knife. "Daniel is a street brawler who grew into a corporate suit. He has a sentimental streak for the help because his father started on the coal docks. It’s a temporary setback. The contracts are already signed. The engagement stands."

"It doesn't stand if I say it doesn't!"

"It stands because we owe forty million dollars to the European syndicates for the lithium shipment that went missing last month!" Arthur roared, his face darkening as he slammed his fist against the table. "Daniel’s shipping lanes are the only way we can move the remaining inventory without the federal task force checking the manifests. You will swallow your pride, you will go back to the Carver mansion tomorrow, and you will apologize to that girl if that's what it takes to keep Daniel from looking too closely at the harbor logs."

The heavy double doors of the dining room didn't open; they were kicked inward with a violent, splintering crash that sent the brass latches flying across the polished floor.

Two of Arthur’s personal security guards were thrown into the room first, their bodies hitting the mahogany table, scattering the crystal glasses and silver platters in a chaotic mess of blood and broken porcelain.

Daniel Carver stepped through the ruined doorway. He wore a simple black sweater, his hands sliding casually into his pockets, his eyes fixed entirely on Arthur Whitlock. Behind him stood six men in dark gray utility jackets, all carrying suppressed automatic rifles, their movements silent, professional, and terrifyingly coordinated.

Claire let out a sharp, terrified shriek, scrambling back from the table until her chair tipped over, sending her sprawling onto the carpet. "Daniel! What are you doing? Are you insane?"

Arthur Whitlock didn't move, but the color completely drained from his florid face. His hand crept slowly toward the small of his back where he kept a compact pistol.

"Don't do it, Arthur," Daniel said, his voice a soft, conversational purr that carried more terror than a scream. "Thomas has a red dot currently sitting on your left kidney from the terrace window. You won't even hear the snap of the firing pin."

Arthur slowly raised his hands, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. "Daniel... this is a misunderstanding. Whatever Claire did at the party, she’s young, she was drinking—"

"I don't care about the party, Arthur," Daniel said, walking over to the head of the table. He picked up Arthur’s silver steak knife, turning it over in his hand, his eyes tracking the light reflecting off the blade. "I care about Pier 14. I care about the three hundred tons of lithium ore you moved through my deep-water terminal using a dead mechanic’s signature to clear the customs manifest."

Claire looked up from the floor, her voice trembling as she tried to find her old, arrogant tone. "You can't prove anything, Daniel. Our lawyers will have you tied up in federal court for ten years."

Daniel laughed, a low, humorless sound that made the guards by the door adjust their grip on their weapons. "Your lawyers don't have an office anymore, Claire. Marcus spent the last three hours uploading your Cayman Island bank records directly to the Internal Revenue Service’s criminal investigation division. As of twenty minutes ago, the federal government has issued a seizure order for every asset bearing the Whitlock name."

He leaned down, placing his hands on the edge of the table, his face inches from Arthur’s. "You're broke, Arthur. You don't own this house. You don't own the cars in the driveway. You don't even own the clothes you're wearing. You belong to the state now."

"You... you can't protect that girl, Daniel," Arthur spat, his eyes filling with a desperate, animal malice. "She’s a Monroe. Her brother Caleb is sitting in a shipping container at the bottom of the eastern slip right now. He’s been dead for three days. The moment the police find him, the trail leads straight to your harbor company."

Daniel didn't flinch. He slowly straightened up, tossing the silver knife onto Arthur’s empty plate.

"Caleb Monroe isn't at the bottom of the slip, Arthur," Daniel said softly. "My boys pulled him out of the safehouse your thugs were keeping him in two hours ago. He’s currently in a federal protective suite in Boston, signing the state's evidence documents."

Daniel turned his back on them, walking toward the door. "Take them, boys. Deliver them to the federal marshals at the city line. Tell them the Carvers are cleaning up their own garbage tonight."
