Chapter 2 - The Mafia’s Heir

The man in seat 2A did not look like an ordinary corporate executive, despite the Italian tailoring. There was an aura of absolute, undisputed authority radiating from him—the kind of quiet, lethal dominance found only in men who command armies or criminal syndicates.

His name was Dante Moretti.

To the business world in Milan, Chicago, and New York, Dante was a reclusive shipping magnate and venture capitalist. To the underworld, he was the head of one of the most powerful and ruthless families on the Eastern Seaboard. But right now, sitting in a first-class airline seat with vomit on his tie and dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes, he was simply a terrified, shattered father.

“My wife... she passed away three weeks ago during childbirth,” Dante said, his voice dropping so low that Clara had to strain to hear it over the cabin noise. “His name is Leo. We’ve been flying from New York to Rome to take him to my family estate. But he hasn't eaten in twelve hours. The doctors said if he refuses fluids much longer, we’ll have to divert the plane.”

Clara felt the breath catch in her throat. The cold hostility she had felt toward him melted instantly, replaced by a profound, aching wave of empathy. She knew what it was like to be trapped, to be terrified for your child’s survival, to have your entire world implode overnight.

“Dante,” Clara said softly, using his first name without even thinking about the breach of protocol. “If you trust me... hand him to me.”

The bodyguard tensed, his hand dropping instinctively toward his jacket. “Sir, you can't be serious. We don't know who she is—”

“Stand down, Paul,” Dante commanded, his voice cold as arctic ice. He didn't take his eyes off Clara. Slowly, deliberately, he unclipped the harness holding the infant against his chest and transferred the screaming, thrashing baby into Clara’s waiting arms.

The moment Leo’s tiny, overheated body touched Clara’s chest, the baby let out an ear-splitting shriek.

Clara didn't hesitate. She turned slightly away from the staring passengers, cradling the infant against her body with the expert, effortless grace of a seasoned mother and nurse. She unzipped her cardigan slightly, guiding the baby toward the natural warmth he had been screaming for.

For three agonizing seconds, Leo fought her, thrashing his head back and forth, crying even harder.

Then, his small nose caught the scent.

His tiny mouth brushed against her skin. He latched on with a sudden, desperate suction that made Clara gasp softly.

Instantly, the screaming stopped.

The silence that fell over the first-class cabin was so absolute it felt unnatural. The only sound was the rhythmic, frantic gulping of the baby as he drank, greedily swallowing as if he had been dying of thirst in a desert.

Dante stared at Clara, his mouth slightly parted. He looked as though he had just witnessed a miracle. His broad shoulders visibly sagged, the iron-clad tension leaving his frame for the first time in days.

“He... he hasn't done that in twelve hours,” Dante whispered, his voice trembling on the edge of breaking.

Clara stood holding the feeding infant, her heart pounding against her ribs. She looked down at Leo, watching his tiny eyelids flutter as the panic drained out of his system, replaced by the heavy, sweet lethargy of a satisfied newborn.

“He was terrified, Dante,” Clara murmured, rocking gently on the balls of her feet. “He lost his mother. He was surrounded by strangers, bright lights, and the smell of artificial rubber and cold formula. Babies don't just need food. They need a soul to anchor to.”

Dante swallowed hard, his gray eyes shining with unshed tears. He reached out slowly, his large, calloused hand hovering just inches from his son’s tiny head, as if he were afraid that touching him might break the spell.

“Who are you?” Dante asked, his voice thick with emotion.

“My name is Clara,” she replied quietly. “And I’m just a mother trying to get her daughter to a safe place.”

Before Dante could respond, a sudden, violent shudder ran through the entire aircraft.

The cabin lights flickered off, plunging the plane into emergency amber lighting, and the captain’s voice crackled over the intercom, screaming panic through the static:

“Cabin crew, sit down immediately! Severe turbulence ahead! Brace for impact!”
