Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

The intrusion happened on a rainy Tuesday. Beatrice was in the kitchen, showing Leo how to make dough, when the security alarm system—a low, oscillating hum—began to vibrate through the floor.

Dominic was out. The guards were scrambling.

Beatrice didn't panic. She didn't scream. She grabbed Leo, shoved him into the hidden pantry under the stairs—a space she had soundproofed for "hide-and-seek"—and pulled a heavy oak dresser in front of the door.

“Stay,” she whispered, her voice fierce. “Don't make a sound. No matter what you hear.”

She walked out into the kitchen, her hands shaking, and grabbed the only weapon she had: a heavy, iron cast-pan.

A man in a black coat stepped into the kitchen. He was tall, thin, and had a scar that ran from his ear to his chin. He smiled, and it looked like a wound.

“Where is he?” the man asked.

“He’s not here,” Beatrice said, her voice steady.

“The boy,” the man sneered, pulling a silenced pistol from his coat. “The boss wants leverage.”

Beatrice looked at the man. She saw the arrogance, the same arrogance she had seen in everyone who had ever belittled her for her size, her softness, her warmth. They always underestimated her. They always assumed she was nothing more than the space she occupied.

“You’re wrong,” she said.

She swung the cast-iron pan with every ounce of frustration, every year of being overlooked, and every instinct of a mother-bear-in-training.

The pan connected with the man’s temple with a sickening thud. He went down like a sack of flour.

She didn't wait for him to wake up. She tied him up with the kitchen twine she’d been using for the dough, gagged him with a dish towel, and sat on the floor, breathing hard, until the security team finally burst through the door.
