Chapter 5 - The Panic Room

"Move!" Emma shouted, grabbing Elena’s arm with a strength she didn't know she possessed.
The sound of shattering glass echoed from the front foyer as heavy boots trampled across the antique hardwood floors. Syndicate enforcers were shouting commands, furniture was overturning, and the sharp, acrid smell of gunpowder began to drift down the hallway.
Emma dragged Elena toward the pantry at the back of the kitchen. She punched the keypad numbers—0-4-1-2—with trembling fingers.
BEEP.
The heavy, steel-reinforced wall panel swung inward, revealing a descending set of concrete stairs lit by an emergency red glow.
"Hurry!" Emma urged, pushing Elena down the steps just as a loud, deafening explosion shook the back patio of the estate.
They tumbled into the panic room—a heavily fortified concrete bunker equipped with bank-vault monitors, emergency comms, medical supplies, and food stores. Emma slammed the heavy steel door shut behind them and threw the dual locking bolts into place with a resounding, metallic thud that locked the outside world away.
Inside the bunker, the noise was muffled to a dull, subterranean rumble, but the security monitors mounted on the concrete wall gave them a terrifying, bird’s-eye view of the chaos unfolding above.
Elena slumped against a metal storage rack, her chest heaving, her hands flying in a frantic, panicked sequence of signs: “Dante! Where is Dante? They are going to kill him!”
"He's fighting them off," Emma said out loud, though she was shaking so badly she could barely stand. She knelt in front of the older woman, grabbing her hands and signing with deliberate slowness to calm her down: “Look at me. Your son is smart, he is prepared, and he is protected. He will not let anything happen to us.”
On the central monitor screen, camera feed four showed the grand foyer of the estate. Three masked men dressed in tactical black gear had breached the front doors, weapons raised, sweeping the hallways.
Suddenly, from the shadows of the grand staircase, Dante emerged.
He moved with terrifying, fluid grace. Before the intruders even realized he was there, Dante’s pistol flashed twice. Two of the masked men dropped instantly to the polished marble floor.
The third intruder spun around, raising his rifle, but Dante closed the distance with explosive speed, slamming the butt of his weapon into the man’s temple and sending him crashing unconscious into a mahogany side table.
In less than twenty seconds, the breach in the foyer was neutralized.
Elena watched the monitor, her hands clamped over her mouth, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. She signed with immense pride mixed with profound sorrow: “He was supposed to be an architect. His father wanted him to build bridges. Instead, he builds graveyards.”
Emma’s heart broke for the woman. She wrapped her arms around Elena, holding her tight as the distant sounds of gunfire gradually died down, replaced by the heavy, ominous silence of smoke drifting through the hallways.
Twenty agonizing minutes passed.

Then, three sharp, rhythmic raps echoed against the heavy steel door of the panic room.
A familiar voice called out through the intercom speaker: "Emma. Ma. It's Dante. Open up."
