Chapter 2 – The Dance Nobody Expected

Connor stopped beneath the new amber light.
He looked up at the lamp.
Then, for the first time since Maya had seen him, the tight lines around his shoulders loosened.
He sat down without covering his ears.
It was a small change.
No one else noticed.
But Maya did.
From that night on, she learned Connor's quiet language.
He didn't like sudden movements.
He counted the buttons on his jacket whenever he felt anxious.
He relaxed when jazz stayed soft and predictable.
He loved lemon slices floating in his water, but only if they were cut evenly.
None of these things were strange to Maya.
They were simply the ways Connor experienced the world.

One evening she found him staring through the restaurant window.
Snow drifted across the Chicago streets.
"What are you looking at?" she asked softly.
Connor didn't answer immediately.
Finally, he whispered.
"Patterns."
She followed his gaze.
Snowflakes settled in circles beneath the streetlights.
"The wind makes different shapes."
Maya smiled.
"I never noticed."
Connor nodded once.
"Most people don't."
It was the longest sentence she had ever heard him speak.
Unfortunately...
Someone else had noticed.
Marco DeLuca.
"You've been spending a lot of time with the boss's kid."
Maya kept polishing glasses.
"I'm serving customers."
Marco leaned closer.
"Don't get attached."
His smile never reached his eyes.
"People around here don't last long when they forget their place."
A week later the Golden Crest hosted Leo Russo's annual charity banquet.
Judges.
Business owners.
Politicians.
Reporters.
Nearly two hundred guests filled the ballroom.
Connor arrived wearing a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.
As always...
Leo seated him alone near the corner.
Away from the conversations.
Away from the cameras.
Away from everyone.
Halfway through dinner a photographer asked for a family picture.
Leo stood.
His lieutenants gathered around.
Connor remained seated.
Marco frowned.
"Come on."
Connor didn't move.
The music suddenly grew louder as the jazz band began another song.
Connor immediately covered his ears.
His breathing became faster.
The room blurred around him.
Someone laughed.
Another guest whispered,
"What's wrong with him?"
Marco grabbed Connor's arm.
"Stand up."
Connor panicked.
The chair tipped backward.
A wine glass shattered.
People turned.
Some stared.
Others quietly moved away.
Connor curled into himself beside the overturned chair, shaking uncontrollably.
The whispers began.
"He's embarrassing his father."
"Why bring him here?"
Leo stood frozen.
Not angry.
Not cruel.
Simply...
Helpless.
He had spent years trying to hide the son he didn't know how to understand.
Then Maya walked across the ballroom.
Ignoring every warning.
Ignoring Marco.
Ignoring the terrified looks from the staff.
She knelt several feet away from Connor.
Far enough not to invade his space.
Close enough for him to see her.
She waited.
She said nothing.
After nearly a minute, Connor slowly looked up.
Maya held out her hand.
May you like
"Would you dance with me?"
The entire room froze.
