Chapter 5 - Dawn on the Estate

Three months later, the Moretti estate in the suburbs of Chicago looked entirely different under the bright, crisp light of a spring morning.

The dark, oppressive aura that had hung over the limestone halls for years had finally lifted. The staff moved through the corridors with lighter steps and genuine smiles. In the gardens near the greenhouse, little Lily Carter could be heard laughing as she chased a butterfly across the emerald lawn, clutching her battered gray rabbit tightly under her arm.

Inside the private second-floor study, Adrian Moretti sat behind his mahogany desk.

He hadn't touched a cup of herbal tea since that fateful midnight visit three months ago. Instead, a simple glass of cold spring water sat beside his laptop.

The dark circles beneath his eyes were completely gone. His skin held a healthy, rested color, and his hands were steady as he signed off on the final restructuring documents for the port authority logistics.

A soft knock sounded at the open study door.

Adrian looked up to see Mrs. Carter standing there, holding a small plate of freshly baked blueberry muffins, with little Lily peeking out from behind her apron.

“Mr. Moretti,” Mrs. Carter said politely, stepping into the room. “Lily insisted on bringing you these. She said you looked like you needed some extra energy today.”

Adrian smiled—a real, genuine, relaxed smile that reached all the way to his eyes. He motioned for them to enter.

“Thank you, Mrs. Carter. And thank you, little lion,” Adrian said, crouching down slightly as Lily scampered forward and proudly placed the plate of muffins on the corner of his desk.

Lily tilted her head, studying his face with critical inspection.

“You look good,” Lily declared solemnly. “You sleep good?”

“Every single night, Lily,” Adrian answered softly, reaching into his pocket and handing her a small, beautifully wrapped box containing a brand-new, silver-trimmed plush rabbit to replace her battered old one. “Every single night.”

Lily gasped, ripping open the box and hugging the new toy with sheer delight before running off to show her mother in the hallway.

Adrian stood up, walked over to the tall French windows, and pushed them open, letting the warm, sweet-smelling spring breeze flood into the room.

Down in the courtyard, the estate was secure, the syndicate was unified under an undisputed king, and his mind was as sharp as a razor.

He took a deep breath, looking out over the Chicago skyline under a brilliant, cloudless sky.

For the first time in his life, Adrian Moretti wasn't just surviving the night.

He was owning the morning.
