Chapter 4 - Ashes to Empire

Three weeks later, the morning sun washed over the grand terraces of the Vale estate in coastal Maine. The charred ruins of the old yacht berth had long since been cleared away, replaced by sweeping gardens of wild roses and manicured hedges.
Inside the grand study—the very room where her father had once sat—Arabella Vale stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the Atlantic waves crash against the rocky shore.
The door opened softly, and Dante stepped into the room, holding a pair of heavy leather-bound ledgers.
“The board of directors just wrapped up the emergency restructuring vote,” Dante said, setting the ledgers on the mahogany desk. “Every subsidiary asset has been legally transferred back into your name. Montgomery is facing three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. His co-conspirators are already singing like canaries.”
Arabella turned around, walking slowly across the Persian rug. She looked entirely different from the broken, filthy woman Dante had pulled from the shadows of West Forty-Sixth Street. There was a quiet strength in her posture now—a regal authority that belonged to the true bloodline of the Vale dynasty.
“You didn't have to come all the way to Maine to deliver the paperwork,” she said softly, a faint smile touching the corners of her lips.
“I wanted to make sure my investment was secure,” Dante replied, his dark eyes softening just a fraction as he looked at her. “Running a multi-billion-dollar global shipping empire is a messy business, Arabella. You’re going to need a very aggressive head of security.”
Arabella stepped closer, stopping just inches away from him. The scent of rain and cedar followed her, mingling with the crisp ocean breeze drifting through the open window.
“And what does a very aggressive head of security charge for his services?” she asked, tilting her chin up.
Dante reached out, his calloused thumb gently tracing the faint line of the crown birthmark hidden just beneath the collar of her silk blouse.
“Dinner,” Dante murmured. “And a promise that no one will ever touch you again.”
Arabella covered his hand with hers, her green-gray eyes shining with a newfound, unbreakable light.

“It’s a deal, Mr. Serrano.”
Outside, the gulls cried out over the endless expanse of the sea, signaling the end of the dark night and the dawn of an empire reclaimed.
