Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Estate

The first rays of morning sunlight broke over the Atlantic, washing the sprawling lawns of the Vale estate in a brilliant, golden glow.

Inside the nursery, Lucas was awake, cooing softly as he stared up at the mobile turning slowly above his crib.

Hannah stood by the window, holding a cup of coffee, watching the ocean waves crash against the rocky shore below. The heavy iron gates of the estate swung open, and Adrian’s car glided smoothly up the circular drive.

A few minutes later, heavy, familiar footsteps echoed down the second-floor hallway.

The nursery door pushed open.

Adrian stood in the doorway. His suit jacket was gone, his tie loosened, and his shirt cuffs unbuttoned. He looked tired, but for the first time in months, the haunted, hollow look in his eyes was entirely gone.

He walked straight toward the crib, looking down at his son. Lucas reached out a tiny hand, his fingers curling instinctively as Adrian extended his index finger.

The baby gripped it tightly.

Adrian closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering breath escaping his chest. He didn't cry this time. Instead, a profound, steady peace settled over his features.

He turned his head, looking across the room at Hannah.

“It’s over,” Adrian said softly. “The docks are secure. Sterling and his men are in federal custody. No one will ever threaten this house again.”

Hannah set her coffee mug down on the dresser and walked over, standing beside him. She looked down at Lucas, then up at Adrian.

“And you?” she asked gently. “Are you safe?”

Adrian looked at her, really looked at her—not as a billionaire boss, not as a desperate father begging in a ruined bakery, but as a man seeing the light after a very long storm.

“I am,” Adrian whispered. He reached out, his warm hand brushing lightly against her arm, right where the flour-dusted sleeve of her sweater met her wrist. “Because of you, Hannah.”

Hannah didn't pull away. She covered his hand with her own, feeling the solid, living pulse of a man who had chosen to step out of the darkness and back into the light.

Outside, the ocean roared, but inside the nursery, the world was finally at peace. The bakery in the city might be gone, but standing here in the fortress by the sea, Hannah realized she had finally found what she had lost: a reason to stay, a reason to heal, and a home where love had finally learned how to breathe again.
