Chapter 10 - The Only Thing Left

Six months later.

The name Vail had vanished from the news columns and the police blotters of New York. The empire had been dismantled from the inside out, the assets seized, the captains imprisoned, and the rivals broken by the weight of the evidence Thomas Bennett had left behind.

In the small town of Cold Spring, high above the Hudson River, a small wooden house sat at the end of a quiet road.

On the porch, an old man sat in a rocking chair, a glass of iced tea in his hand. Silas watched the yard where two children were running through the tall grass. Eli was laughing, his lungs clear and strong, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Tristan had bought him three weeks ago.

Clara sat on the porch steps, her hair now clean and bright, tied back with a new blue ribbon. She had a book open on her lap, but her eyes were fixed on the driveway.

A black sedan pulled up the gravel path.

Tristan Vail stepped out. He wasn't wearing the cashmere coat or the bespoke suits anymore. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans, his face looking older, lined with the exhaustion of a man who had spent half a year tearing down a world he had spent his life building.

He walked up the porch steps, nodding to Silas, then sat down next to Clara.

She looked up from her book, her pale blue eyes serious, but no longer afraid. "Is it over?"

Tristan looked out at Eli, who had fallen into the grass, giggling as the puppy licked his face. He reached out and gently tapped the edge of Clara’s book.

"It's over," Tristan said. "There are no more ledgers. No more cameras."

Clara closed the book, her small hand reaching out to touch his arm—not to drag him into the dark this time, but simply to know he was there.

"What do we do now?" she asked.

Tristan smiled, a genuine, quiet expression that felt completely foreign to his face, yet entirely right. "We learn how to live in a house that doesn't have any secrets."
