Chapter 5 - The Ashes of Redemption

The air in the hallway was thick with gunpowder and the metallic scent of blood. Marco stood there, his face unreadable as his last remaining loyalists fell to my fire. The silence that followed was heavy, pregnant with the weight of the bodies that carpeted the floor.
I stepped over the debris, my rifle empty, my shoulders burning with the exertion of the fight. I stood before him, the last man standing in my empire.
Marco looked at me, his eyes devoid of fear. "You still lose, Lorenzo. You might kill me, but you have no family. You have no business. The Morettis are already at your gates. They’ll be here by morning."
"Let them come," I said, my voice a low, dangerous growl. "I never cared about the money, Marco. I never cared about the docks or the real estate. I cared about the name."
I raised my pistol.
"You betrayed the blood," I said. "And the blood is the only thing that matters."
I pulled the trigger.
The sound was singular, final. Marco slumped to the floor, his eyes fixed on the ceiling, the life draining from him.
I turned away, the adrenaline starting to recede, leaving behind a cold, sharp clarity. I walked back into the nursery. Elena was sitting on the floor, holding Leo, who was sleeping through the chaos, wrapped in a blanket.
She looked up at me, her face pale. "It's over?"
"For now," I said.
I looked at my son. He was alive. He was healthy. And for the first time in my life, I felt like I was actually capable of raising him—not as a Rossi, not as a boss, but as a father.
I stepped to the window, watching the sunrise paint the horizon. The Morettis would be here, but they would find a fortress, not a mansion. They would find a man who had nothing left to lose and everything to protect.
I turned to Elena. "You stay here. You keep him safe. I have to go finish this."
"Lorenzo," she said, her voice soft. "You can't do this alone."
I looked at the pistol in my hand, then at the son who held the future of my life in his small, fragile body.
"I'm not doing it alone," I said. "I'm doing it for him."
I walked out of the room, shutting the reinforced steel door behind me, locking it from the outside. I headed for the armory, the sound of the Moretti engines approaching the gate.
I had been a king. I had been a monster. But as I checked the ammunition in my pockets, I realized that I had finally found my purpose.
I was the Rossi head, and I would protect my house until the last drop of blood hit the stone.

The dawn broke over the estate, casting a long, golden light across the battlefield. I waited, my heart steady, my hands calm, and for the first time in years, the silence was mine to hold.
My name is Lorenzo Rossi. And I am not dying today.
