Chapter 5 - The Dawn of a New Era

Six months later, the Moretti estate was bathed in the warm, golden light of a crisp October afternoon. The autumn leaves fell in slow, colorful spirals across the manicured lawns, settling softly against the stone pathways.

On the grand terrace overlooking the gardens, Alessandro Moretti sat in his favorite wrought-iron armchair, reading a leather-bound volume of poetry.

A pair of small, hurried footsteps pattered across the stone patio.

“Mr. Moretti!”

Alessandro lowered the book and smiled as Sophia came running around the corner of the terrace, holding up a large sketchpad with both hands. Her yellow sweater had been replaced by a smart blue school uniform, and her dark hair was tied back with a neat red ribbon.

“Look what I drew today at school!” she announced proudly, thrusting the pad toward him.

Alessandro took the book gently.

On the page, drawn with meticulous care using the silver pen he had given her, was a picture of the grand estate. In the foreground stood a tall man in a sharp suit, a smiling woman holding a stack of books, and a little girl holding a worn teddy bear, all standing beneath a bright, shining sun.

In the corner of the page, written in careful, neat second-grade handwriting, were the words: Safe.

Alessandro traced the letters with his thumb, feeling a warmth in his chest that had nothing to do with medicine and everything to do with grace.

“It’s a masterpiece, Sophia,” he said softly, lifting his gaze to meet her bright, intelligent eyes.

“Are you going to frame it?” she asked, tilting her head.

“Right above my desk,” Alessandro promised, pulling her close for a brief, warm hug that felt like a second chance at life. “Where no one will ever take it down.”

Down on the sweeping driveway below, Gabriel parked the black sedan and stepped out, looking up at the terrace with a respectful nod. The empire was secure. The enemies were gone. And for the first time in twenty-five years, Alessandro Moretti realized he wasn't just guarding a fortress anymore.

He was finally at home.
