Daniel opened the front door.

A crashing sound.
Daniel and Serena hurried outside, looked around nervously, then dragged Emily's backpack back inside before calling no one.
They never called 911.
They never sought medical help.
Instead...
A frightened neighbor had discovered Emily lying at the bottom of the front steps nearly twenty minutes later and called an ambulance.
The evidence became overwhelming.
Phone records.
DNA evidence from the bedroom.
Whiskey bottles.
Emily's blood on the staircase railing.
Laura's recording.
The district attorney filed charges including child abuse, aggravated assault on a minor, child endangerment, obstruction of justice, and failure to obtain emergency medical care.
The trial lasted only eight days.
When Emily testified through closed-circuit television, she held her favorite stuffed bear.
The prosecutor asked softly,
"Were you telling the truth that day at the hospital?"
Emily nodded.
"I promised Mommy soldiers always tell the truth."
Several jurors wiped away tears.
The verdict was unanimous.
Daniel was convicted on every major charge.
Serena was convicted of child endangerment, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice for helping conceal the assault and refusing to seek medical care.
