Chapter 5 - The Reunion on Michigan Avenue

The evening sun cast a warm, golden glow over the skyline of Chicago, painting the glass facades of Michigan Avenue in shades of amber and rose.

The heavy oak doors of the grand penthouse suite swung open, revealing a living room transformed. Gone were the sterile, minimalist lines of a bachelor pad. Piles of new toys, sketchbooks, colored pencils, and two small beds set up near the massive windows now filled the space.

Sophie and Luke were sitting on the plush carpet, completely engrossed in building a towering castle out of wooden blocks, their laughter echoing through the empty rooms.

Marian Blake stood by the kitchen island, smiling as she poured a cup of coffee. She looked at Grant, who stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the city below with his hands in his pockets.

“You know, Mr. Bennett,” Marian said quietly, “you could have taken the morning off. The board isn't going to bother you for at least a month after what you pulled today.”

“I had unfinished business, Marian,” Grant replied, not turning around.

The private elevator chime chimed softly down the hall.

Grant froze.

The low, melodic ding echoed through the penthouse.

Sophie and Luke stopped playing, looking up toward the hallway.

Footsteps approached the double doors—soft, hesitating footsteps that paused just outside the threshold.

Grant turned slowly from the window. His heart hammered against his ribs with a violence he hadn't felt since the day he lost everything.

The door pushed open.

Standing in the entryway was a woman in a simple beige trench coat. Her brown hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders, and her eyes—those unmistakable, haunting gray-blue eyes—were filled with unshed tears.

Claire.

She looked older, wiser, carrying the invisible scars of seven years spent searching, hiding, and fighting to keep her children safe after Haven House tore them from her arms.

She looked past Grant, her gaze locking onto the two children sitting on the rug.

“Sophie... Luke...” Claire choked out, her hands flying to her mouth as a sob broke free from her chest.

“Mom!”

Both children leaped up from the floor, running across the room and throwing themselves into her arms. Claire dropped to her knees, burying her face in their hair, weeping uncontrollably as she held them tightly against her as if afraid they would vanish into smoke.

Grant stood frozen a few feet away, unable to move, unable to speak. The mighty real estate titan, the man who had outmaneuvered Wall Street and dismantled a criminal syndicate in twenty-four hours, suddenly felt entirely powerless.

Claire slowly stood up, holding Luke in one arm while keeping Sophie close against her side. She looked up, her gray-blue eyes meeting Grant’s.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The seven years of bitter words, unreturned phone calls, pride, and ambition hung in the air between them like a ghost.

Then, a small, familiar dimple appeared on the corner of Claire’s mouth as a weak, tearful smile broke through.

“You haven't changed your suit,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Still custom. Still too expensive.”

Grant let out a breath that sounded half like a laugh and half like a sob. He walked across the room, closing the distance between them until he was standing right in front of her, looking down into the eyes he had never truly stopped loving.

“I changed everything else, Claire,” Grant said, his voice thick with emotion as he reached out, gently resting his hand on her cheek, tracing the exact same curve that Sophie had mirrored the day before. “I built an empire, but I lost my home. I spent seven years trying to buy the world back, only to realize I was completely bankrupt without you.”

Claire leaned into his touch, a single tear rolling down her cheek to catch on his thumb.

Sophie looked up at them, holding her cracked plastic bracelet with purple beads in one hand and her brother’s small hand in the other. She looked at Grant with that old, ancient seriousness, and asked the only question that mattered:

“Are you going to be our dad for more than one day now?”

May you like

Grant dropped to one knee beside Claire and the children, wrapping his arms around all of them in an unbreakable embrace.

“For the rest of my life,” Grant whispered against Claire’s hair, looking out at the glittering lights of Chicago through the glass. “For all of them.”
