Chapter 6 - The Snake in the Boardroom

The realization hit Eleanor like a physical blow. The fire hadn't been an accident. Her daughter hadn't died. Thomas Whitmore had kidnapped the five-year-old girl, dumped her hundreds of miles away in another state with a head injury, and staged a fatal fire to steal the family wealth.

For twenty-two years, Thomas had sat on the board of Whitmore Hospitality, collecting millions in dividends, while the rightful heir to the empire was eating scraps out of garbage bins behind the very hotels he owned.

"Where is he, Eleanor?" Lucy asked, her voice quiet but filled with the hard, survival-honed edge of the streets. "Where is the man who did this to us?"

"He is at the corporate headquarters on State Street," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a register that made even Dr. Vance step back. "He is currently hosting the annual shareholders' dinner. He believes he is about to be voted in as the new CEO because I’ve been 'too distracted by my grief' to lead the company."

Eleanor stood up. She looked at Lucy’s torn sneakers, her tangled hair, and the dirt on her cheeks.

"Marcus," Eleanor called through the open door to her driver. "Call my personal stylist, the boutique director at Chanel on Newbury Street, and my head of corporate security. Tell them we have an emergency restructuring meeting at the headquarters in exactly one hour. And tell them the primary shareholder has just arrived."
