Chapter 3 - The Cage of Consequences

The stark, oppressive cold of the county jail holding cell smelled of damp concrete, cheap floor wax, and rust.
Mark sat on the edge of a narrow metal bench, his head buried in his hands. He was still wearing his work shirt, but the buttons were torn, and his boots had been stripped of their laces by the intake guards.
His hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same horrific sequence of events replay in terrifying detail: the loud crack of his palm striking Sarah's face. The way her head whipped around. The sound of her heavy, pregnant body hitting the hard linoleum floor. The look of pure, unadulterated terror in her eyes as she curled around their unborn baby.
And then, the blue hands. Jessica's manicured, evil, blue-stained hands flailing in the air as she admitted to throwing a sick child's medicine in the garbage just to frame an innocent woman.
"Vance!" a guard barked, rattling heavy iron keys against the cell bars. "You've got a visitor. Five minutes."
Mark jumped up frantically. "Is it Sarah? Is she okay? Please tell me the baby is okay!"
The guard didn't answer. He simply cuffed Mark’s wrists behind his back and led him down a long, dim hallway to a small visitation room divided by thick, scratched plexiglass.
Mark sat down on the stool, his heart pounding against his ribs. He looked through the glass, expecting to see his lawyer or perhaps a remorseful Jessica.
Instead, sitting on the other side of the glass was Arthur Pendelton, immaculate in his dark navy suit, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses.
Mark blinked, confused. "Who are you? Did Jessica send you?"
"Jessica Vance is currently in a high-security holding cell three doors down from yours, Mr. Vance," Pendelton said smoothly, his voice coming through the small metal speaker near the counter. "She is facing eight federal and state charges. She will not be helping you today."
"Then who are you?!" Mark yelled, slamming his cuffed hands against the counter. "I need to get out of here! My wife is in the hospital! My son has cancer! I need to be with them!"
"You will never be near either of them again," Pendelton said calmly.
Pendelton slid a document against the glass.
"I am the chief legal counsel for Sterling Maritime Logistics and the executor of the Sarah Sterling Trust," Pendelton announced. "I am here to serve you with emergency divorce papers, a temporary restraining order, and an order of immediate eviction from the Oakridge property."
Mark stared at the papers through the glass, his mind reeling. "Sterling Trust? What the hell are you talking about? Sarah is a schoolteacher! Her father was a mechanic!"
"Her father was Thomas Sterling, the founder of the largest shipping logistics firm on the East Coast," Pendelton corrected him, his tone dropping into an icy register. "Sarah chose to live modestly because she wished to find a husband who loved her for her character rather than her wealth. It appears her faith in humanity was disastrously misplaced."
Mark’s breath caught in his throat. The world seemed to tilt violently beneath his feet. "She... she has money?"
"She has an fortune exceeding eighty million dollars," Pendelton stated flatly. "And every single asset you believed you possessed—your commercial trucks, the lease on your office, the very roof over your head—was funded through sub-leases underwritten by her trust."
Pendelton pulled a red pen from his pocket and tapped the glass.
"As of eight o'clock this morning," Pendelton continued, "your equipment has been repossessed. Your bank accounts have been attached by court order to pay for Sarah’s medical expenses resulting from your assault. And your home locks have been changed."
"No..." Mark whispered, tears spilling over his bloodshot eyes. "No, no, no... this is a mistake! I love Sarah! I was confused! Jessica tricked me! She lied to me about the medicine!"
"Jessica did not force your hand to strike a seven-month pregnant woman, Mr. Vance," Pendelton spat, his calm mask slipping slightly to reveal a terrifying, righteous rage. "You chose to believe a venomous, jealous woman over the gentle, devoted mother who spent three years nursing your sick child while you worked late. You chose violence. And now, you will choose how you pay for it."
"Please..." Mark sobbed, pressing his forehead against the cold plexiglass. "Let me see her! Let me tell her I'm sorry! I'll go down on my knees! I'll do anything!"
"Sarah has signed a permanent protection order," Pendelton said, packing his papers back into his leather case. "If you attempt to contact her, approach her hospital room, or come within one thousand yards of her or little Leo, you will be arrested immediately and remanded without bail."
Pendelton stood up, smoothing his jacket.
"Oh, and one final detail, Mr. Vance," Pendelton added, looking down at Mark with absolute disdain. "Regarding your son, Leo... Sarah has instructed the medical board that she will personally cover every dollar of his oncology care, his private tutoring, and his recovery housing. You, however, will be paying formal child support from whatever wages you manage to earn once you are released from state prison."
"You're taking my son from me?" Mark cried out, his voice echoing frantically off the concrete walls.
May you like
"You gave him up the moment you chose to hit the woman holding his life in her hands," Pendelton said coldly.
The heavy steel door opened, and Pendelton walked out, leaving Mark sitting alone on the metal stool, weeping helplessly into his cuffed hands as the terrifying weight of his ruin crushed him into nothingness.
