Chapter 2 - The Inner Circle

Within twenty minutes, the grand hall had transformed from a celebration into a tribunal.

The heavy oak doors were bolted shut from the inside. Armed guards stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the perimeter, their hands resting casually on the holsters beneath their tailored suits. The twelve crime family bosses sat in tense clusters, whispering nervously among themselves, casting sideways glances at one another like wolves trapped in a pen.

I stood near the service archway, holding Emma tightly against my hip. She had grown drowsy from the late hour, her small head resting heavily against my shoulder, completely unaware that the room around us was a powder keg ready to detonate.

Alessandro walked slowly down the center aisle between the long mahogany tables, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. In his hand, he held Emma’s blue rabbit.

“Three years ago,” Alessandro began, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room, “a shipment of untraceable bearer bonds worth forty million euros vanished from our Swiss vault. The courier carrying them was allegedly incinerated in a safehouse explosion in Milan. The case was closed. The traitor was presumed dead.”

He stopped pacing and turned his gaze directly toward the table reserved for the Romano syndicate.

At the center of that table sat Marco Romano—Vivian’s father, a man who controlled the real estate development contracts across half of Lombardy.

Marco forced a tight, oily smile, lifting his wineglass in an unconcerned gesture. “Alessandro, my boy, surely you don't believe an old family friend like me has anything to do with a lost courier? We’ve supported the Moretti bloodline for decades.”

“Have you, Marco?” Alessandro asked softly.

Valerio stepped forward, slamming a heavy black leather binder onto the center table. The binder popped open, scattering dozen of photocopied bank transfer slips, encrypted message transcripts, and high-resolution photographs across the polished wood.

“Last week,” Valerio announced to the room, “our digital security division cracked the encrypted hard drive recovered from the personal laptop of Marco Romano’s chief financial officer. The funds stolen from the Swiss vault weren't burned in a fire. They were laundered through a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under the name Blue Rabbit Holdings.”

Gasps erupted around the tables. Several bosses stood up, knocking their chairs backward.

Marco Romano’s face turned an ugly shade of mottled purple. He slammed his fists onto the table, half-rising from his seat. “This is a fabricated lie! A forgery designed to usurp Romano territory!”

“Is it?” Alessandro stepped closer, his shadow completely swallowing Marco’s seat. “The emblem stitched into this child’s toy was registered to Sector Four logistics. Only three men had the master cryptographic key to issue that specific embroidered mark. One of them died in prison. One of them is me.”

Alessandro paused, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

“And the third... was your personal head of security, Marco. The man who conveniently retired to the Italian Riviera the exact week the vault was cleared.”

Vivian let out a sharp, hysterical cry, rushing toward Alessandro and grabbing his sleeve. “Alessandro, you can’t listen to this! He’s my father! You’re marrying into our family—you can't accuse us like common criminals over a maid’s toy!”

Alessandro looked down at her hand resting on his arm. Slowly, deliberately, he peeled her fingers away, letting her hand drop as if she were carrying a plague.

“The wedding was canceled the moment you struck Mrs. Bennett in my hallway, Vivian,” Alessandro said, his voice devoid of any human warmth. “Your father’s ambition blinded him. He thought he could steal from the Moretti treasury, hide the loot behind shell companies, and use my own house to humiliate the people who accidentally crossed his path.”
