Chapter 5 - Dawn Over the Empire

Three months later.
The rain over Manhattan had cleared, leaving behind a brilliant, blinding spring morning that washed the glass and steel of the city in golden light.
High above the financial district, from the wraparound corner office on the sixty-eighth floor of the Vasquez Tower, the view was breathtaking. Down below, yellow cabs and microscopic pedestrians moved through the canyons of Wall Street like clockwork.
Nema stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, wearing a tailored midnight-blue pantsuit, a gold Rolex resting elegantly against her wrist. On her desk sat a stack of international logistics contracts, venture capital acquisitions, and corporate governance files bearing her signature as Executive Vice President of Vasquez Global Enterprises.
The remnants of Tommy’s syndicate had been utterly erased. The federal indictments had swept through the corrupt factions of the shipping lanes, leaving Dom’s empire completely cleansed, legitimate, and untouchable.
The heavy oak door of the office swung open.
Dom walked in, carrying two cups of black coffee from a private espresso machine. He wore a crisp charcoal suit, looking every bit the untouchable king of the city.
He walked up behind her, setting one cup down on the glass desk before wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder as they looked out over the city together.
“Penny for your thoughts, Executive Vice President Reyes,” Dom murmured against her ear.
Nema smiled, resting her hands over his arms. “I was just thinking about Frank’s Diner.”
Dom chuckled, a low, warm sound. “Do you miss it? The scratched tables, the cracked red booths, the flickering neon sign?”
“Not a chance,” Nema replied honestly. “The coffee was terrible, the tips were nonexistent, and the customers were a nightmare.”
Dom turned her gently in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down into her dark, intelligent eyes—eyes that had once watched a cup of poison across a greasy spoon, and now commanded a multi-billion-dollar empire.
“And the man who walked into that diner?” Dom asked softly. “Any regrets about him?”
Nema reached up, her fingers tracing the sharp line of his jaw, a fearless, confident smirk playing across her lips.
“He’s lucky I was working that night,” Nema whispered. “Otherwise, someone else might have drank his coffee.”

Dom leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of rich espresso and absolute victory.
The cup was never meant to be drunk. But the empire they built from its ashes was entirely theirs.
