Chapter 5 - The Fortress and the Heart

Clara gasped, standing up so fast that Bruno instantly scrambled to his feet, his ears pinning back, his low growl returning with ferocious intensity.
“Grant?” Clara cried, her face losing all color. “How did he get past the main gates?”
“The blizzard cut visibility to zero on the lower access road,” Matteo explained calmly, reaching into his desk drawer and pulling out a heavy black sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced efficiency. “He used the weather to slip past the outer cameras.”
“Matteo, please,” Clara begged, grabbing his arm, her eyes full of terror. “He’s desperate! He owes money to terrible people! Don't let your guards hurt him—just let me talk to him and tell him to go away!”
Matteo stopped, looking down at her hands gripping his sleeve. He reached up with his free hand, gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing her cheekbone.
“Listen to me very carefully, Clara,” Matteo said, his voice smooth, cold, and absolute. “You will never negotiate with a parasite who threatens you. You are under my protection now. In this house, no one touches what belongs to me.”
He turned to the intercom. “Marco.”
“Yes, Boss?”
“Do not shoot them. Intercept them in the service courtyard. Bring Grant Hayes to the main hall. I will handle him myself.”
“Understood, sir.”
Matteo looked at Clara. “Stay here with Bruno.”
“No,” Clara said firmly, her chin rising in defiance. “I’m coming with you.”
Matteo stared at her for two seconds, seeing the fierce, unwavering courage shining in her green eyes. A dark, proud grin touched his lips.
“Then keep Bruno on his leash,” Matteo said, handing her a thick leather lead. “Because if Grant Hayes raises his voice to you, I will not be able to stop this dog from eating him alive.”
Five minutes later, the grand lower hall of Villa Moretti was lit by towering wrought-iron chandeliers.
The heavy oak front doors flew open, and four broad security guards shoved three drenched, shivering men into the center of the marble room.
In the middle stood Grant Hayes.
He was thirty-two years old, wearing a soaked leather jacket, his eyes wild, bloodshot, and sunken with panic. His hands were shaking violently as he looked around at the towering marble pillars, the armed guards standing along the balconies, and the absolute luxury of the estate.
“Clara!” Grant screamed, spotting her as she walked down the grand marble staircase beside Matteo, with Bruno moving like a dark shadow at her hip. “Clara, thank God! You have to help me!”
Grant took a fast step forward, but two security guards instantly grabbed his arms, pinning him in place.
“Clara, these guys are crazy!” Grant yelled, his voice echoing hysterically against the high ceilings. “I owe sixty thousand euros to the Lucresi guys in Milan! They said if I didn't pay by midnight, they were going to break my legs! You work here—you must have access to the house safes! Just get me fifty thousand! You owe me!”
Clara stopped on the third stair from the bottom, looking down at her ex-husband with a cold, terrifying clarity that she had never felt before in her life.
“I owe you nothing, Grant,” Clara said, her voice clear, resonant, and completely devoid of fear. “I paid off your gambling debts for three years. I worked sixteen-hour days while you sat in bars losing my money. You took my self-respect, my confidence, and my peace of mind.”
“Clara, please!” Grant sobbed, dropping to his knees on the marble floor. “They’re going to kill me!”
Matteo stepped down off the last stair, standing tall and imposing between Grant and Clara. He adjusted his coat, his presence so suffocatingly powerful that Grant’s frantic shouting died in his throat.
“You entered my private property uninvited, Mr. Hayes,” Matteo said softly, stepping closer to the kneeling man. “You threatened my staff, and you frightened the woman who holds my heart.”
Grant blinked, looking up at Matteo in absolute, horrified realization. “Your... your heart? She’s just a maid!”
BANG!
Matteo’s right fist struck Grant directly across the jaw with terrifying speed and precision.
Grant crumpled onto the marble floor with a groaning thud, blood leaking from his lip, his eyes wide with absolute shock and agony.
“She is not a maid,” Matteo growled, standing over him like an ancient king. “She is the mistress of Villa Moretti.”
Matteo looked up at Marco. “Call the state police in Como. Inform them that Grant Hayes and his accomplices breached a private estate under the influence of illegal narcotics. Hand over the security footage of their intrusion.”
“Right away, Signor Moretti,” Marco bowed.
“And Marco,” Matteo added softly.
“Sir?”
“Contact our legal team. Buy every single one of Grant Hayes’s outstanding debts from the Lucresi syndicate tonight. From this moment on, Grant Hayes owes sixty thousand euros directly to the Moretti Estate. He will work in our Genoa shipping warehouses packing crates until every single cent is paid back with interest.”
Grant gasped in utter horror as the security guards hauled him up off the floor, dragging him out into the freezing night toward the waiting police cruisers. “Clara! Clara, please! Don't do this to me!”
Clara didn't look back. She stood on the stairs, watching the doors close behind them, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of her past lift off her shoulders forever.
The grand hall fell into a peaceful silence.
Matteo turned around, walking slowly up the stairs until he stood right in front of Clara.
Bruno sat down between them, letting out a satisfied, heavy thump of his tail against the marble step.
Matteo reached out, taking Clara’s hands in his, holding them gently against his chest.
“He will never hurt you again, Clara,” Matteo promised softly, his dark eyes brimming with pure, unyielding devotion. “No one will ever hurt you as long as you are in this house.”
Clara looked into his eyes, feeling the warmth of his hands, the safety of his presence, and the quiet strength of the dog sitting at their feet. She realized then that she hadn't just survived a disaster in the courtyard six days ago—she had found her home.
“I’m not going anywhere, Matteo,” Clara whispered, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face.

Matteo smiled—a true, brilliant smile that transformed his handsome face—and leaned down, pulling her into a deep, tender kiss that sealed their future under the warm lights of Villa Moretti.
Beside them, Bruno let out a soft, contented sigh, closing his dark eyes as the snow continued to fall peacefully over Lake Como outside.
