CHAPTER 1 — THE MAN WHO STOPPED HIS CAR

The city was alive with its usual noise—honking cars, hurried footsteps, and the endless rush of people chasing their next destination.
Eight-year-old Emma knelt on the cold sidewalk, her hands trembling.
Beside her lay her younger brother, Noah.
His eyes were closed.

A small stuffed bear rested near his hand.
“Please wake up,” Emma whispered, tears running down her cheeks.
People walked past.
Some looked.
Most didn't stop.
Then a black luxury sedan screeched to a halt beside the curb.
The rear door opened before the driver could react.
A tall man in a gray suit jumped out and ran toward the children.
His name was Alexander Hayes, one of the wealthiest businessmen in the city.
But at that moment, none of that mattered.
“What happened?” he asked, dropping to one knee.
Emma struggled to speak.
“My brother... he just fell.”
Alexander immediately checked Noah's pulse.
Weak.
Dangerously weak.
“Call an ambulance now!” he shouted to his driver.
Without hesitation, he removed his expensive jacket and placed it beneath Noah's head.
For the first time in years, a business meeting no longer seemed important.
Saving a child did.
As the ambulance sirens approached, Emma grabbed his sleeve.
“Please don't leave us.”
Alexander looked into her frightened eyes.

“I promise,” he said softly.
“I won't.”
