CHAPTER 1: THE LITTLE GIRL WHO STOPPED THE WEDDING

The church was filled with music, flowers, and smiling guests.

Everything was perfect.

Nathan Carter stood at the altar beside his beautiful bride, Olivia. In just a few minutes, they would become husband and wife.

The priest opened his book.

"We are gathered here today—"

A cry suddenly echoed through the church.

"Please don't marry him!"

The music stopped.

Every head turned.

A little girl stood at the end of the aisle.

She couldn't have been older than seven.

Tears streamed down her face as she clutched a framed photograph of a young woman.

The guests stared in confusion.

Nathan frowned.

"Whose child is that?"

The little girl ran down the aisle.

Her small shoes slapped against the marble floor.

When she reached the altar, she stopped directly in front of Nathan.

"Please," she sobbed. "You promised my mommy you would never leave us."

The church exploded into whispers.

Olivia stepped backward.

"What is she talking about?"

Nathan stared at the girl.

He had never seen her before.

"Sweetheart, I think you've made a mistake."

The little girl shook her head violently.

"No."

She held up the photograph.

Nathan's face turned pale.

The woman in the picture was Emma Lawson.

The love of his life.

The woman who had supposedly died eight years earlier.

The woman he had never stopped mourning.

His hands began to shake.

"Where did you get that picture?"

The girl burst into tears.

"She's my mommy."

The church fell silent.

Nathan felt the world spin around him.

Because if Emma was the girl's mother...

Then everything he believed about her death might have been a lie.
