Chapter 2 - The Smile That Could Not Be HiddenLucy lowered her head immediately.

"I'm sorry, Mom," she whispered. "He was alone."

Clara Harper glanced across the ballroom. Matthew stood beside his father while photographers called for another picture.

"You weren't supposed to talk to the guests," Clara said softly, trying to keep her voice calm. "Especially not the Vale family."

Lucy looked back at Matthew.

"He wasn't a guest," she answered quietly. "He looked... forgotten."

Those words struck Clara harder than she expected.

For six years she had worked inside the Vale mansion. She had watched expensive parties, political dinners, charity galas, and business celebrations. She had seen Alexander Vale build one of the largest technology companies in America.

She had also seen his son standing alone more times than she could count.

Clara sighed.

"You have a kind heart," she said. "But kindness can make powerful people uncomfortable."

Before Lucy could reply, a loud burst of applause echoed through the ballroom.

Alexander had finished accepting his award.

"...because every child deserves access to communication and education," he declared confidently from the stage.

The audience stood.

Some even wiped away tears.

Lucy stared at him.

Every child?

She looked toward Matthew.

He wasn't watching his father.

He was watching the floor.

After the speeches ended, the ballroom became crowded again.

Matthew slipped away from the photographers as soon as he could.

His assistant tried to stop him.

"Matthew!"

But he pretended not to notice.

A minute later, he found Lucy near the service hallway.

She smiled.

He smiled even wider.

Missed you, he signed.

Lucy understood enough to recognize the words.

"I missed you too," she answered aloud while signing the little she knew.

Matthew laughed.

He pulled a small notebook from his pocket and wrote.

Can we go outside? Too noisy.

Lucy nodded immediately.

The mansion's back garden stretched toward a quiet lake lined with white roses and maple trees.

Although Matthew couldn't hear the music inside, he could feel the vibrations through the marble floor.

Outside...

Everything finally felt peaceful.

The night sky shimmered with thousands of stars.

Matthew pointed upward.

Then he signed slowly.

My favorite place... everywhere has stars.

Lucy looked up.

"My grandfather used to say every star is somebody's hope refusing to disappear."

Matthew read her lips carefully before she wrote the sentence into his notebook.

He smiled again.

Then he wrote something that surprised her.

Can I meet your grandfather someday?

Lucy's smile faded.

"He passed away last winter."

Matthew's face immediately filled with regret.

He quickly signed.

I'm sorry.

Lucy nodded.

"But before he died... he told me something."

She opened her poetry book.

Inside was an old black-and-white photograph.

A young soldier stood beside another man wearing hearing aids.

"My great-grandfather learned sign language because of his best friend."

Matthew studied the picture.

Lucy continued.

"He always said..."

She slowly signed the sentence Samuel had taught her.

Never leave anyone behind.

Matthew's eyes became watery.

Nobody had ever signed those words to him before.

Not his teachers.

Not his father's assistants.

Not even Alexander.

Only this little girl wearing a simple blue dress.

Neither of them noticed someone watching from the second-floor balcony.

Alexander Vale.

He had come outside for a private phone call.

Instead, he saw something he hadn't witnessed in years.

His son...

Laughing.

Not the polite smile used for photographs.

Not the practiced expression expected during charity events.

A real laugh.

His shoulders relaxed.

His eyes shined.

Alexander frowned.

How?

His own therapists had struggled for years to make Matthew this comfortable.

Yet the housekeeper's daughter had done it in less than thirty minutes.

Before he could think further, one of his investors approached.

"Alexander!"

He looked away.

When he glanced back...

The children were already walking beneath the garden lights, signing to each other beneath the stars.

May you like

For reasons he couldn't explain...

Alexander felt strangely left out.
