Chapter 5 - The Music Returns

Spring arrived in Greenwich three months later, melting the last stubborn patches of snow across the twenty acres of the Vale estate.

Inside the mansion, the heavy silence that had haunted the corridors for years was gone.

On a bright Sunday afternoon, the sound of music drifted through the open windows of the sunroom.

It wasn't a recording playing over a high-end sound system. It was the rich, resonant chords of a grand Steinway piano, its polished ebony surface catching the golden sunlight streaming through the glass.

Clara Harper walked down the second-floor hallway carrying a basket of fresh linens, smiling as she listened to the melody.

In the sunroom, Alexander Vale sat on the piano bench, his fingers moving across the ivory keys with a rusty, hesitant grace. Standing beside him was Matthew, his hand resting flat against the wooden body of the piano, his eyes closed as he felt the deep, rhythmic vibrations pulsing through the wood and straight into his bones.

By the doorway, Lucy stood with her hands behind her back, watching them with a quiet, radiant smile.

When the final chord faded into the warm afternoon air, Matthew opened his eyes and looked at his father.

He raised his hands and signed: Mom would have loved that.

Alexander stopped, his hands lingering on the keys. A soft, genuine smile broke across his face—the real smile, the one the business magazines had never managed to capture because it had only recently been unlocked.

He reached out and signed back, his movements slow and certain: I know she would have, son. I know she would have.

Down in the garden, beneath the old willow tree where the branches hung like a green curtain, the breeze whispered through the leaves, carrying no noise, but carrying a world of meaning for those who finally knew how to listen.
