Chapter 3 - The Reconstruction
The sun rose over the Rocky Mountains at 6:45 a.m., washing the Denver skyline in brilliant shades of amber and rose.
Inside the house on Maple Street, the forensic tape had been removed from the front hallway, but the heavy, suffocating weight of betrayal still lingered in the air.
Laura sat at the kitchen island, a mug of black coffee cooling untouched between her hands. On the counter beside her lay a stack of legal documents she had retrieved from Daniel’s home office safe—documents he thought he had successfully hidden.
The door-bell chimed.
Laura stood up and walked to the front door, pulling it open. Standing on the porch was Marcus Vance, a senior partner from the high-powered family law firm downtown, accompanied by a junior associate carrying a briefcase. Marcus had known Laura’s father—a decorated retired military judge—and had handled the airtight prenuptial agreement Laura’s father insisted upon twelve years ago, despite Daniel’s protests.
"Morning, Laura," Marcus said softly, stepping inside. His eyes scanned the clean, modern foyer before fixing on her. "I received your encrypted message at 3:00 a.m. The detention center called me thirty minutes ago—Daniel’s defense counsel is already trying to file for an expedited bail hearing, claiming the fall was an unfortunate domestic accident."
"They can file whatever they want," Laura said, gesturing for them to sit at the kitchen table. She slid the financial folders and text transcripts across the granite surface. "Look at these statements, Marcus. Three days ago, Daniel transferred forty thousand dollars from our joint savings into an offshore account registered under a corporate shell company in Serena's name. That’s marital asset dissipation during the commission of a felony."
Marcus adjusted his glasses, flipping through the pages. A slow, appreciative smile spread across his face. "Well, well. He didn't just cheat; he handed us a silver platter for complete financial forfeiture. Under the terms of your prenuptial agreement—strengthened by this documented embezzlement and child endangerment—Daniel forfeits all claims to the primary residence, corporate stock options, and joint savings. Furthermore, we can petition the court for full, sole custody of Sophie, restricting his visitation rights to supervised environments only."
"Good," Laura said flatly. "I want him legally and financially dismantled before the sun sets today."
"And your sister?" Marcus asked carefully.

"Serena is an adult facing accessory charges after the fact and reckless endangerment," Laura replied without a flicker of hesitation. "She can hire her own public defender."
Marcus closed the folder with a sharp snap. "Consider it done, Captain. I’ll meet with the district attorney's office at 9:00 a.m. Your husband is going to find out what happens when you mistake a quiet woman for a weak one."
