CHAPTER 1 — The Birthday Party That Turned Into a Nightmare

The pink balloons still floated across the living room floor.

Confetti sparkled under the afternoon sunlight.

A half-finished birthday banner reading "Happy 7th Birthday, Emma!" hung crookedly on the wall.

Everything looked like a celebration—except for the little girl lying motionless in the center of the room.

At the top of the staircase, Sarah Bennett froze.

Her heart stopped.

For one horrifying second, she couldn't understand what she was seeing.

Then she saw the rainbow dress.

The white shoes.

The stuffed elephant beside her daughter.

"EMMA!"

Sarah's scream echoed through the house.

Behind her, twelve-year-old Olivia and ten-year-old Megan rushed down the stairs.

The girls stopped halfway.

Both turned pale.

Emma wasn't moving.

The birthday girl lay surrounded by scattered confetti and popped balloons.

Sarah nearly fell as she raced down the staircase.

She dropped to her knees beside her youngest daughter and grabbed her hand.

Cold.

Too cold.

"Emma, baby, wake up."

Nothing.

No response.

No smile.

No giggle.

No complaint about her sisters stealing her birthday candy.

Just silence.

Sarah's hands trembled as she searched for a pulse.

A weak one.

Very weak.

"Oh God..."

Olivia immediately called 911 while Megan began crying uncontrollably.

Within minutes, sirens filled the neighborhood.

Paramedics stormed into the house.

As they worked frantically around Emma, one medic noticed something strange.

Tiny pink frosting stains around her mouth.

And beside the couch...

A small paper plate with a single slice of birthday cake.

Half-eaten.

The medic looked up.

"What exactly did she eat today?"

Sarah stared at the cake.

Suddenly remembering something.

Earlier that morning, Emma had received a mysterious gift box left on the front porch.

No card.

No sender.

Just a note.

"For the birthday princess."

At the time, it had seemed harmless.

Now Sarah felt ice run through her veins.

Because the cake slice beside Emma wasn't from the birthday cake she had baked.

It came from that gift box.

And someone had wanted Emma to eat it.
