Chapter 4 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

The weeks that followed were a blur of depositions, subpoenas, and late-night strategy sessions. Arthur took up residence in a high-security suite, turning his life into a bunker. Maria and Elara stayed with him, their presence the only thing that kept him tethered to humanity.
He started a new company, "Sterling Legacy," from scratch, using the few assets he had secured before the board froze his primary accounts. He didn't care about the money. He cared about the exposure.
Elara became his secret weapon. During depositions, she sat in the back of the room, her eyes darting between the witnesses, her hands relaying every nervous tick, every whispered aside, every lie told under oath.
The CFO is shaking. He knows about the shell company in the Cayman Islands, she signed during a particularly brutal session.
Ask him about the 'Project Aethelred' invoices, Arthur would respond.
When he threw the question at the CFO, the man’s face turned white, and he promptly requested a recess.
Arthur felt the weight of the company—the building he had poured his life into—slipping away, but he didn't care. He was burning it all down to save himself. It was a liberation. He had spent his life building a cage; now, he was finally breaking the bars.
But the board was not done. They hired a team of private investigators to discredit Elara. They started rumors that she was "manipulative" and "mentally unstable." They tried to paint the narrative that Arthur was a lonely old man being taken advantage of by a devious child and her mother.
Elara saw the articles. She saw the headlines. And for the first time, she cried.
Arthur held her, his hand resting on her hair. "They are afraid of you, Elara. They are afraid of someone who can see them for what they are. Don't you ever let them make you feel small. You are the only person who has ever truly looked at me and cared if I lived or died."
She dried her eyes, her resolve hardening. She sat down at her computer and began to do what she did best: observe. She didn't just read lips anymore; she read data. She read the digital footprints of the men who were trying to destroy them. She found the email chains, the encrypted messages, the offshore accounts.
She was no longer a witness. She was an investigator.
