Chapter 2 - The Voice UpstairsClara lowered her eyes.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. Would you like them folded another way?”
Madison walked closer, her expensive perfume filling the room.
“No,” she said softly. “I’d like them folded by someone who belongs in a house like this.”
She swept every towel onto the floor.
“Start again.”
Clara quietly bent down and began refolding them.
From the doorway, little Lily watched everything.
That night, Ethan returned home after another sixteen-hour workday.
Madison greeted him with a smile and a kiss.
"Dinner is ready."
Behind them, Clara silently served the meal while hiding the bruise on her wrist beneath her sleeve.
She had learned never to complain.
Every time Ethan entered the room, Madison became affectionate.
Every time he left...
The mask disappeared.
Weeks passed.
Madison's demands became crueler.
She criticized Clara for invisible dust.
She forced her to scrub marble floors by hand.
She deducted money from Clara's pay for imagined mistakes.
Worst of all...
She targeted Lily.
"If your mother worked harder," Madison would whisper, "you wouldn't have to live in that little cottage."
Lily never answered.
She simply hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.
One rainy afternoon, Ethan unexpectedly arrived home early.
He noticed Lily sitting alone on the back steps drawing with broken crayons.
"What are you drawing?" he asked.
Lily smiled shyly.
"A superhero."
Ethan looked at the picture.
The superhero wore a black business suit.
A cape.
And glasses.
"It looks like me," he said with a smile.
Lily nodded.
"I wish it really was."
Before Ethan could ask what she meant, Madison called from inside.
"Lily! Don't bother Mr. Whitmore!"
The little girl immediately lowered her head and hurried away.
Ethan frowned.
Something about her reaction didn't feel normal.
A few days later, Madison hosted an elegant charity dinner.
Investors, politicians, and reporters filled the mansion.
Crystal glasses sparkled beneath the chandeliers.
Everything appeared perfect.
Clara quietly served wine while Lily colored upstairs in the staff cottage.
Halfway through dinner...
A glass shattered.
Madison slowly turned.
"You incompetent woman."
"It slipped," Clara apologized.
"I'm so sorry."
Madison smiled politely for the guests.
Then leaned close enough that only Clara could hear.
"When dinner is over..."
"...you'll wish you'd never touched that glass."
Clara felt her stomach tighten.
Near midnight, after every guest had gone home, Madison walked into the kitchen.
She locked the door.
"No witnesses now."
She slapped Clara across the face.
Hard.
The force knocked her against the counter.
A heavy copper pan crashed onto the floor.
Upstairs...
Lily heard everything.
She quietly stepped into the hallway.
She saw her mother bleeding from a cut above her eyebrow.
She saw Madison grab Clara by the hair.
"If you tell Ethan..."
"I'll make sure nobody ever hires you again."
Lily began crying.
Madison turned toward the staircase.
"And you..."
"If you make one sound..."
"I'll send you and your mommy back to living in your car."
The little girl ran.
Not toward her room.
Toward the only office in the mansion she knew.
Mr. Ethan's office.
She remembered something he had once told her while fixing her broken toy.
"If you're ever scared..."
"...call me."
She picked up the office phone with trembling hands.
Downstairs...
Ethan's personal phone vibrated during a business dinner.
The caller ID displayed only one word.
Office.
He answered.
A tiny voice whispered through tears.
"Mr. Ethan..."
"Please come upstairs."
"Mommy is bleeding again."
Everything inside him froze.
He stood so abruptly that his chair crashed backward onto the marble floor.
May you like
Without saying a word...
He ran.
