Chapter 5 - The Anatomy of a Lie

The silence in the ballroom was so heavy you could hear the distant howling of the sleet against the stained-glass windows.

Thirty-eight of Boston’s most powerful, wealthy, and influential people stared down at the silver tray in my hands. Then, slowly, in unison, their eyes drifted upward from the diamonds to Celeste Harrington.

Celeste stood paralyzed, her chest heaving beneath her emerald gown, her makeup suddenly looking harsh and thick under the blinding glare of the chandeliers. All the practiced grace, all the aristocratic superiority, all the carefully constructed lies evaporated into thin air, leaving behind a terrified, exposed fraud.

“Care to explain this, Celeste?” Gabriel’s voice was dangerously quiet. It wasn't loud. It didn't carry the theatrical rage that Celeste had used just minutes before. It was the cold, flat tone of a man calculating exactly how much destruction he was about to unleash.

“I... I can explain,” Celeste stammered, her voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whine. She reached out with a trembling hand toward Gabriel’s sleeve. “Gabriel, please—it’s not what it looks like! I—I found it! Yes! Just before I shouted, I found it lying on the floor near the drinks table, and I—I panicked! I didn't know how it got there, and I thought someone was trying to steal it, so I picked it up—!”

“You said it was missing from the velvet tray,” Gabriel interrupted, his gray eyes narrowing into two sharp blades of ice. “You stood in front of thirty-eight guests and announced that it had been stolen out of the room. You singled out a member of my staff, publicly humiliated her, dragged her family through the dirt, and accused her of a felony.”

“I was confused! The lights were bright, the stress of the party—!”

“You lied,” Gabriel stated flatly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to. The finality in his tone carried the weight of a guillotine blade dropping. “You staged a theft to get rid of someone you considered beneath your social standing.”

Senator Vance cleared his throat, shifting uncomfortably, and whispered something to his wife before quietly turning toward the exit doors. Other guests began to avert their eyes, murmuring among themselves, suddenly finding the intricate patterns on the marble floor utterly fascinating.

Celeste’s face crumpled. The aristocratic mask was completely gone now. She grabbed Gabriel’s lapel, tears spilling over her mascara-stained eyelashes. “Gabriel, you can’t do this! We’re getting married in three months! My father’s firm holds forty percent of the logistics shares in your shipping grid! You can’t embarrass me like this over a—over a maid!”

Gabriel reached down, unhooking her fingers from his tuxedo lapel one by one with cold, surgical precision. He stepped back, putting a wall of empty space between them.

“Your father’s shares are legally tied to a non-performance clause regarding personal conduct and public scandal,” Gabriel said, his voice devoid of any human warmth. “As of ten seconds ago, your father’s legal team is going to receive an email from my general counsel dissolving both our business partnership and our engagement.”

Celeste let out a choked, desperate shriek. “Gabriel, no! You can’t! You—!”

“Security,” Gabriel called out, his voice cutting through her hysterics.

Two massive guards in black suits stepped out from the shadows of the conservatory hallway instantly.

“Escort Miss Harrington off the property,” Gabriel ordered, not even bothering to look at her as she wept openly. “And ensure her personal belongings are boxed and shipped to her father’s townhouse by morning. She is never to set foot on Mercer grounds again.”

“You’ll regret this!” Celeste screamed as the two guards grabbed her arms, lifting her heels off the marble as she thrashed and kicked, her Milanese gown dragging across the floor. “You’re throwing away a dynasty for a nobody! You’ll pay for this, Gabriel! Both of you!”

Her shrieks echoed down the grand hallway, growing fainter and fainter until the heavy double doors slammed shut, sealing her outside in the freezing Boston sleet.
