Chapter 5 - The Final Verdict

Within two hours, Daniel’s black SUV was speeding across the Queensboro Bridge toward Astoria, with Daniel, Hannah, and Pendelton inside.
They arrived at the modest, peeling apartment building where Hannah had lived before taking the job at the penthouse. Rushing inside, Hannah dug through her old belongings until her hand struck a cold, leather-bound notebook covered in dust.
She handed it to Daniel.
He flipped through the pages. Written in cramped, meticulous handwriting were bank account numbers, wire transfer receipts, and signed memos proving that Richard Vance—who had been a junior partner at Apex Builders nineteen years ago—had intentionally looted the company accounts, framed Daniel’s father for the financial collapse, and left the workers with nothing.
“He didn't just try to ruin my hotel project,” Daniel said, his voice trembling with a cold, terrifying fury. “He stole my family’s name, and he killed your husband’s future.”
“Can we use this?” Hannah asked, her eyes shining with unshed tears.
“We don't just use it,” Daniel replied, a fierce, determined smile breaking across his face. “We bury him.”
Three days later, a special emergency press conference was called at the Whitfield Grand Hotel. Over a hundred reporters crammed into the auditorium, expecting another scandal.
Instead, Daniel Whitfield walked onto the stage, flanked not by a glittering socialite, but by his lawyer Arthur Pendelton—and Hannah Miller, who wore a simple, elegant navy dress, holding her daughter’s hand.
Daniel stepped up to the microphone. The flashes blinded the room.
“Nineteen years ago, my family’s name was dragged through the mud for a collapse we didn't cause,” Daniel began, his voice ringing out with absolute authority. “Today, we have uncovered definitive proof—signed by Richard Vance himself—that the financial ruin of Apex Builders was an intentional fraud orchestrated by Vance Global to steal worker settlements and corporate assets.”
He held up the leather notebook for the cameras to see.
“Furthermore, all outstanding debts and fraudulent claims filed against my company by Vance have been proven null and void. Federal marshals are currently executing search warrants at Vance Global headquarters.”
A roar went through the press corps. Microphones thrust forward. Reporters shouted questions over one another.
“Mr. Whitfield! Is it true you’re taking over Vance Global?”
“Mr. Whitfield, who is the woman standing beside you?”
Daniel didn't answer the reporters. Instead, he turned away from the podium, walked down the steps, and knelt right in front of Emma, who was holding a small wooden block in her hand.
“Mr. King,” Emma asked loudly, so the microphones picked up every word, “did we win the game?”
Daniel smiled—a real, genuine smile that reached his eyes for the first time in his life. He looked up from Emma to Hannah, whose cheeks were flushed with a mixture of shock and profound relief.

“Yes, little one,” Daniel said softly, taking Hannah’s hand in his. “We won. And we’re never letting go.”
Behind them, the flashbulbs illuminated the beginning of a brand-new empire—built not on lies, pillows, and society contracts, but on truth, survival, and a little girl who asked the one question that changed everything.
