CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

"Graham."
Dr. Marcus Ellington did not slow down as the gurney disappeared through the emergency operating doors.
"You can wait outside."
The heavy doors slammed shut.
For several seconds, Graham simply stood there, unable to breathe.
Twins.
His wife was carrying twins.
The words echoed through his mind until they no longer sounded real.
Sabrina grabbed his arm.
"What was that?" she demanded. "Did he say twins?"
Graham looked at her but couldn't answer.
A nurse hurried toward the nurses' station carrying Evelyn's chart.
Without thinking, Graham stepped into her path.
"I'm her husband."
The nurse hesitated before checking his identification.
"Mr. Donovan?"
"Yes."
She nodded once.
"Your wife is twenty-nine weeks pregnant with twins. She's suffering severe blood loss following a placental complication. The surgical team is doing everything they can."
Graham felt the floor disappear beneath him.
"Twenty-nine weeks?"
"Yes."
He whispered the number to himself.
Twenty-nine weeks.
Nearly seven months.
Seven months.
His hands began to shake.
He searched his memory.
Business trips.
Late-night meetings.
Charity galas he attended alone.
The weekends Evelyn claimed she was visiting her sister.
The oversized sweaters.
The canceled vacations.
Every sign had been there.
He had simply never looked.
Sabrina stared at him.
"You didn't know?"
"No."
She laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
But Graham wasn't listening anymore.
Another doctor approached carrying a clipboard.
"Mr. Donovan?"
"Yes."
"We need immediate authorization in case emergency delivery becomes necessary."
His signature trembled across the page.
"What are her chances?"
The doctor's expression remained carefully professional.
"We're fighting to save three lives."
The words hit harder than anything Graham had heard in years.
Three lives.
Not one.
Three.
For the first time in a very long time, money offered no solution.
Across the hallway, Sabrina quietly slipped into the restroom.
She locked the door.
Then she pulled a pregnancy test from her designer handbag.
It showed exactly what she already knew.
Negative.
It always had been.
Her entire future had depended on convincing Graham she was carrying his child.
May you like
Now his real children were fighting to survive behind those operating-room doors.
And suddenly, her carefully built lie was beginning to collapse.
