Chapter 2: The Boy Who Never Spoke

Everyone expected Clara to scream.

Instead, she stayed on her knees.

The bronze horse rolled across the marble floor with a loud clang.

Noah raised his fists again, ready to hit her.

Clara looked directly into his tear-filled eyes.

And saw something nobody else had noticed.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

The kind of fear a child carries when he believes the world is dangerous.

Slowly, despite the pain in her ribs, Clara lowered her gaze and whispered,

"You don't have to fight me."

The mansion fell silent.

Even the guards exchanged confused looks.

Noah froze.

For the first time in months, someone wasn't yelling at him.

Wasn't grabbing him.

Wasn't trying to control him.

Clara carefully reached into her canvas tote.

Every guard immediately tensed.

Dominic stepped forward.

"What are you doing?"

Without answering, Clara pulled out a small stuffed rabbit.

Old.

Worn.

Missing one button eye.

It had belonged to her younger brother.

She placed it on the floor between them.

Then backed away.

Noah stared.

Thirty seconds passed.

One minute.

Then the impossible happened.

The little boy slowly crawled forward.

Picked up the rabbit.

And hugged it.

Mrs. Hargrove nearly dropped her clipboard.

Dominic couldn't remember the last time he had seen his son hold anything without throwing it.

But what happened next shocked everyone even more.

Noah looked directly at Clara.

And whispered a single word.

"Stay."

The entire room froze.

Because it was the first word Noah had spoken in almost two years.
