Chapter 2 - The Groom Removed His Mask

Silence settled over the chapel.
The priest looked uncertain, glancing from the masked billionaire to the lawyer standing beside the altar.
Everyone waited.
Then the old man slowly lifted his gloved hand.
Instead of answering immediately, he reached toward the porcelain mask.
A housekeeper gasped.
Mr. Vale frowned.
"No, sir..." one servant whispered.
Nathaniel Hawthorne ignored them.
His fingers loosened the hidden clasp behind his head.
The mask came away.
It did not reveal the ruined face Evelyn had expected.
It revealed a man no older than thirty-two.
Strong jaw.
Dark hair.
Clear blue eyes.
Only a faint scar ran along his right cheek.
The entire chapel froze.
Even the priest forgot to breathe.
Evelyn stared in complete disbelief.
"You..."
Her knees nearly gave way.
"You're not ninety."
The man offered the first genuine smile anyone had seen that morning.
"No."
"My name is Nathaniel James Hawthorne."
"I am thirty-two."
"And everything you've been told about me was a lie."
Mr. Vale stepped forward immediately.
"Mr. Hawthorne..."
Nathaniel raised one hand.
"Enough."
His calm voice filled the chapel.
"I asked for today's ceremony because I needed to know one thing."
He looked directly at Evelyn.
"Whether someone would still choose kindness after believing they had lost everything."
Evelyn shook her head.
"I didn't choose kindness."
"I chose survival."
Nathaniel nodded slowly.
"Exactly."
He turned toward the lawyer.
"Tell her."
Mr. Vale sighed.
"Miss Parker... six months ago Mr. Hawthorne learned that Hawthorne Holdings had been illegally using his family's lending company."
"They created debt contracts that violated federal law."
"Several executives—including your father's loan officer—were selling desperate families into forced marriage agreements disguised as debt settlements."
Evelyn felt the room spin.
"My father..."
"Was manipulated," Nathaniel said quietly.
"He borrowed money."
"But he never agreed to sell his daughter."
"The contract was forged."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"So... this wedding..."
"Was never legally binding."
Nathaniel gently removed the marriage license from the priest's book.
He tore it in half.
Then again.
Small pieces floated onto the marble floor.
"There."
"You are free."
The priest finally found his voice.
"What... what happens now?"
Nathaniel looked toward the chapel doors.
"Now..."
"We arrest everyone responsible."
The massive wooden doors burst open.
Federal agents entered first.
Behind them came state investigators and local police officers.
Mr. Vale calmly handed over several thick folders.
"Evidence collected over fourteen months."
One agent immediately approached the priest.
"We have warrants for six executives of Hawthorne Holdings."
Another officer turned toward the servants.
"No one leaves the estate."
Evelyn stood perfectly still.
Everything she believed only minutes earlier had completely fallen apart.
Nathaniel looked back at her.
"I'm sorry."
"I know that isn't enough."
"But I couldn't expose them without letting them believe their plan had succeeded."
She swallowed hard.
"You let me think I was being sold."
Pain crossed his face.
May you like
"I know."
"And I'll regret that for the rest of my life."
