Chapter 2 - The Truth on the Big Screen

A pin dropping onto the velvet carpets would have sounded like a cannon blast.
Dominic blinked, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. “Julian... what did you just call her? Madam what?”
Chloe let out a nervous, high-pitched giggle that died in her throat. “Julian, you’re making a joke, right? That’s Vivienne! She’s an unemployed kindergarten aide! She doesn't have a penny to her name!”
Julian Vance straightened up, his face hardening into granite as he turned to face the bride. “Mrs. Lawson, you are currently addressing Vivienne Montgomery-Vane, the majority equity partner of Montgomery Global Holdings and the sole legal owner of this hotel, this ballroom, and the land beneath your feet.”
Eleanor’s hand flew to her throat, her chest heaving as if she were suffocating. “That’s... that’s impossible! Dominic, what is this nonsense?”
Dominic’s face turned the color of damp ash. He looked at me, his eyes filled with a sudden, horrifying comprehension. “Vivienne... your maiden name... you told me it was Miller...”
“Miller was my mother’s maiden name,” I replied coldly, adjusting the torn shawl around my shoulders. “I used it because I wanted to marry a man who loved me for who I was, not for my family’s trust funds. But as it turns out, Dominic, you didn't love me either. You simply viewed me as someone you could control and humiliate to elevate your own pathetic ego.”
“Wait!” Chloe shouted, stomping her foot, desperate to regain control of the room. “Who cares whose name is on the deed? A thief is a thief! My million-dollar diamond ring is gone! She stole it right before the toast! Look at my hand! It’s gone!”
“Is it, Chloe?” I asked, turning my gaze toward the mezzanine level above us.
Julian tapped his earpiece twice. “Booth three. Bring up feed four, cameras B and G. Direct feed to the ballroom presentation screens.”
Above the main stage, where the wedding band had been playing, two massive 4K projection screens flickered to life. The glowing display of the bride and groom’s childhood photo montage instantly vanished, replaced by high-definition, crystal-clear security camera footage timestamped at 7:14 PM—exactly twenty minutes before Chloe began screaming.
The footage showed the private bridal suite on the third floor.
On screen, Chloe stood in front of the vanity mirror, laughing with her cousin Amanda. The audio, recorded by the suite’s state-of-the-art surveillance microphones, played through the ballroom’s surround-sound system with absolute clarity.
“Are you sure this will work?” Amanda’s voice echoed through the ballroom.
“Of course it will work,” Chloe’s recorded voice replied on the giant screens. “The ring was never worth a million dollars anyway. It’s a lab-grown imitation I bought for four thousand. The real heirloom ring is insured for eight hundred thousand with Lloyd’s of London. When I accuse that broke bitch Vivienne of stealing it during the toast, Mom will rip her apart in front of Dominic’s business associates. Vivienne will be too humiliated to ever show her face again, Dominic will finally divorce her, and we’ll collect the insurance payout to cover the wedding bills.”
On the screen, Chloe slid the ring off her finger, dropped it into Amanda’s silver evening purse, and closed the clasp with a distinct click.
The entire ballroom gasped in unison.
Several of Dominic’s high-profile business partners took immediate steps backward, looking at the Lawson family with utter disgust. Photographers lowered their cameras in shock.
Near the back of the room, Amanda turned white as snow and made a frantic dash for the exit doors.
“Halt,” Julian Vance said into his mic.
Two armed security guards stepped into Amanda’s path, blocking the double doors with crossed arms. Julian walked over, smoothly took the silver evening purse from Amanda’s trembling hands, opened it, and pulled out the velvet box containing the supposedly stolen diamond ring.
Julian returned to the center of the room and placed the box on the champagne table.
“Grand larceny,” Julian stated calmly. “Conspiracy to commit federal insurance fraud. And intentional destruction of private property.”
Chloe collapsed against the ice sculpture, her hands shaking uncontrollably as tears of panic ruined her heavy foundation. “Mom... Dominic... do something! Tell them it was a prank! It was just a joke!”
Eleanor rushed forward, grabbing Dominic’s sleeve, her voice shrill and hysterical. “Dominic! Tell them! Tell this man that we are family! Vivienne is your wife! She has to forgive us!”
Dominic turned toward me, his hands outstretched, falling to his knees right on the marble floor. “Vivienne... Viv, honey, please. I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know they planned this! You have to believe me!”
I looked down at the man I had lived with for three years, feeling nothing but a profound, hollow pity.

“You didn't know about the ring, Dominic,” I said softly. “But when your mother tore my dress in front of two hundred people, you knew. When your sister called your pregnant wife cheap trash, you knew. And you chose to stand there and let them break me.”
The heavy mahogany doors at the main entrance swung wide open.
