Chapter 5 - A Queen’s City

Six months later.

The autumn air over Lake Michigan was crisp and clear. Gold and amber leaves drifted through the manicured gardens of the Moretti estate.

On the grand terrace overlooking the blue expanse of the lake, a small, elegant celebration was taking place. The city’s power structure had changed completely. Gallagher Financial was gone, replaced by Thompson-Moretti Global Consulting—a powerful financial intelligence firm headed by Chloe Thompson.

In six short months, Chloe had become one of the most respected and feared financial directors in the Midwest. She had reorganized the legitimate shipping and commercial operations of the Moretti syndicate, turning them into a bulletproof legal empire that generated record profits while insulating the family from federal scrutiny.

She stood near the marble balustrade, wearing a breathtaking deep-emerald velvet gown—a deliberate homage to the dress she had worn the night her life changed forever. Her hair fell in soft ringlets over her shoulders, and a diamond necklace sparkled at her throat.

A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Vincent pulled her back against his broad chest, resting his chin lightly on her shoulder. The smell of his cologne and the warmth of his body enveloped her in complete comfort.

“You’re quiet tonight, mia regina,” Vincent murmured in her ear, his deep voice sending a familiar, pleasurable shiver down her spine.

“I was just thinking,” Chloe said, leaning back into his embrace, placing her hands over his on her waist. “About the Drake Hotel. About how terrified I was when I ran into that hallway.”

Vincent chuckled softly, his lips brushing the curve of her neck. “And you chose to grab the worst man in Chicago.”

“I didn't grab the worst man,” Chloe said, turning around in his arms to face him. She looked up into the dark eyes that now held only warmth and fierce devotion for her. “I grabbed the only man strong enough to hold me without trying to break me.”

Vincent’s expression softened. The terrifying mob boss who ruled the city’s underground vanished, leaving only a man deeply, undeniably in love.

He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.

Chloe’s breath caught in her throat.

Vincent didn't hesitate. He did not drop to his knee out of performance, but took her hand, opening the box to reveal a massive, flawless emerald cut diamond flanked by tiny black sapphires, resting on a bed of platinum.

“Six months ago, you kissed me to save yourself,” Vincent said softly, holding her eyes with a seriousness that made her heart soar. “Every day since then, I have fallen in love with your mind, your strength, and your beautiful soul. I don't want to just offer you safety, Chloe. I want to offer you my name, my empire, and my heart. For the rest of my life.”

He looked at her, his dark eyes vulnerable in a way no one else in the world was ever allowed to see.

“Will you marry me, Chloe?”

Chloe looked down at the ring, sparkling brilliantly in the autumn sunlight, then up at the man who had seen her worth when she had forgotten it herself, who had fought for her, honored her, and treated her like a queen.

Tears of pure happiness welled in her eyes, but she didn't wipe them away.

“Yes,” she whispered, her voice overflowing with emotion. “Yes, Vincent. Absolutely yes.”

Vincent slipped the ring onto her finger—a perfect fit.

Then he framed her face with his large, scarred hands, pulling her up into a deep, passionate kiss that swept away every remaining shadow of her past. Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him tight, surrendering to the overwhelming feeling of being loved completely, unconditionally, and fiercely.

When they finally broke apart, Vincent smiled, resting his forehead against hers.

“The whole city knows who you are now, Chloe Moretti,” he whispered proudly against her lips.

Chloe looked out over the sparkling lake, feeling the solid gold ring on her finger and the warmth of the man holding her close. She smiled—a radiant, unbreakable smile.

“Let them learn,” she said softly. “I’m just getting started.”
