Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Within the Syndicate

Peace, however, was a fragile commodity in Philadelphia.
It happened on a cold Tuesday night, exactly two months after Sadie entered Gabriel’s world. She was reviewing supply inventories at a private medical facility in the Northern Liberties district when the heavy steel security doors rattled violently.
Before the night-shift guards could react, a squad of armed men in tactical gear breached the facility.
Trapped in the back office, Sadie’s heart raced as she heard shouts, scuffles, and the unmistakable pop of a silenced firearm echoing down the sterile hallway.
Baltimore, was her first thought. They had found her.
She reached for her encrypted corporate phone to dial Gabriel’s direct line, but before her thumb could hit the call button, the office door swung open.
Standing in the frame was Marcus Vance—one of Gabriel’s oldest capos, a man who had smiled at her during board meetings and welcomed her into the inner circle with grandfatherly warmth.
Except right now, Marcus was holding a 9mm automatic pistol, and his eyes were cold as ice.
“Well, well,” Marcus sneered, stepping into the office and locking the door behind him. “The little bartender who charmed the boss. Gabriel has gone soft, letting an outsider manage our ledgers. But once I liquidate you and take control of the port logistics, the old man’s empire will finally be mine.”
Sadie’s blood ran cold, but her training over the past two months kicked in. She didn't scream. She backed slowly away toward the heavy oak desk, her hand sliding inside her blazer pocket where she kept her emergency panic button linked directly to Gabriel’s private detail.
“Gabriel trusts you,” Sadie said, stalling for time, her voice steady despite the cold barrel of the gun pointed at her chest.

“Trust is a luxury for men who are ready to retire,” Marcus spat, raising his weapon. “Say goodbye, little nurse.”
Before his finger could squeeze the trigger, the reinforced steel door of the office exploded inward in a shower of splinters and screaming alarms.
