Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary Under the Table

The velvet drapes of the VIP booth parted with a whisper as Maya slipped through. Behind the heavy fabric, the air was cool and smelled of expensive sandalwood, premium Cuban tobacco, and a sharp, metallic edge of dangerous authority.

At the far end of the booth sat a man alone in the semi-darkness. He didn't turn his head when she entered. He was staring down at a crystal glass containing two fingers of dark amber liquid, his large, calloused hands resting flat on the mahogany table. He wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit that looked as though it had been crafted specifically to hide the broad, lethal frame beneath it. His dark hair was clipped short, and a faint, jagged scar cut through the outer edge of his left eyebrow, giving his handsome face an expression of permanent, predatory focus.

This was Julian Sterling.

The city called him a businessman, a philanthropist, and a real estate mogul. But the streets—and the staff at The Obsidian—knew him as the ghost who pulled the strings of the city’s underground. He was the boss who didn't raise his voice because he never had to.

Maya’s breath hitched in her throat. She was trapped between a devil in a trench coat outside and a king of shadows inside.

"Get out," Julian said. His voice was a low, quiet rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. He still hadn't looked at her. "I don't require service tonight."

Outside, the muffled sound of Derek’s voice cut through the lounge’s soft jazz. He was speaking to the bartender, his tone sharp, demanding, and escalating.

"I'm looking for a girl. Silver vest. Tired eyes. Don't lie to me, friend, I know she works here."

Maya’s knees gave out. The sheer terror of hearing that voice again—the voice that had haunted her dreams for six months—drained the remaining strength from her legs. Without thinking, she dropped to her hands and knees.

"Please," she whispered, her voice cracking with a desperation so raw it seemed to pierce the quiet of the booth. "Please, just let me hide. Just for five minutes. I’ll do anything."

Before Julian could answer, she scrambled forward, sliding her body under the low, heavy mahogany table. She pulled her knees tight to her chest, pressing her back against the velvet-upholstered wall of the booth’s base, right beside Julian’s polished leather shoes. She held her breath, closing her eyes, trying to make herself as small as a speck of dust.

For a long, agonizing second, there was only the sound of the rain beating against the glass.

Then, Julian slowly shifted his legs. One of his heavy boots lightly brushed against her knee, but he didn't kick her out. Instead, he reached down with one hand, his fingers catching the hem of the heavy, floor-length velvet tablecloth, pulling it down to ensure it completely blocked any view of the space beneath.

"Be silent," he murmured, his voice barely louder than the hum of the air conditioning. "If you make a sound, I will hand you to them myself."
