Chapter 5 - The Trap is Set

The rain fell in relentless, heavy sheets over Manhattan the following evening, blurring the city lights into a smear of neon and grey. Bailey stood in the shadow of a limestone awning across the street from Marcus’s luxury penthouse building on Fifth Avenue. She wore a dark trench coat, her blond hair tucked tightly beneath a black silk scarf.

At exactly ten o'clock, her phone vibrated once. A single text from an unknown number: Done.

Seraphina had delivered. The security cameras in the lobby and the private elevator bay were down for the next sixty minutes, logged as a "scheduled system maintenance override" by Arthur’s security firm.

Bailey crossed the street, her heels clicking softly against the wet pavement. She entered the lobby through the side service entrance, bypassing the front desk where a bored guard was staring at a blank monitor screen. She slipped into the private elevator and pressed the button for the penthouse floor.

The elevator rose silently, the numbers ticking upward like a countdown. When the doors opened directly into the marble foyer of the penthouse, the apartment was dark, illuminated only by the ambient glow of the city skyline through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

She walked purposefully toward Marcus’s private study inside the apartment. Her penlight illuminated the mahogany desk, identical in luxury to the one in Greenwich. Behind a hidden panel in the bookshelf sat the heavy steel safe.

Using the passcode Seraphina had extracted from Marcus during a moment of alcohol-induced carelessness the previous weekend, Bailey entered the sequence: 04-14-11. The date of Thorne Dynamo’s first public offering. The date Marcus believed he became invincible.

The safe door swung open with a heavy metallic groan.

Inside lay stacks of cash, offshore banking certificates, and a single, matte-black encrypted hard drive labeled Project Helios - True Baseline.

Bailey picked up the drive. Her hands were steady now. The fear that had plagued her for the past forty-eight hours had burned away, replaced by the cold, calculating precision of the forensic accountant she used to be. This drive contained the evidence that the Helios Core was a lethal fraud. It was the weapon that would dismantle Marcus Thorne’s kingdom.

Suddenly, the overhead lights flashed on, blinding her.

"I always knew you were efficient, Bailey," a voice dryly observed from the doorway. "But I must admit, I didn't think you had the courage for breaking and entering."

Bailey blinked against the light, her eyes adjusting. Standing in the doorway was not Marcus.

It was Arthur Langdon.

He was dressed in a tailored coat, his umbrella dripping water onto the pristine hardwood floor. In his hand, he held a sleek, silver smartphone, its camera lens pointed directly at her.

"Arthur," Bailey said, her voice remaining perfectly calm despite the sudden surge of adrenaline in her chest. She didn't drop the hard drive; she slipped it into her trench coat pocket.

"You really should have stayed in Greenwich, managing the orchids," Arthur said, walking into the room with the slow, predatory confidence of a man who had already won. "Did you honestly think Seraphina wouldn't call me the second you left her gallery? The girl is terrified of prison, Bailey. She knows which side her bread is buttered on. She came straight to me."

Bailey didn't flinch. "So, you set this up."

"Of course," Arthur smiled, a cruel, thin-lipped expression. "I needed Marcus out of the way for tonight, so I sent him to a fabricated late-night dinner with the Tokyo group's junior associates. And I needed you to commit a felony on camera. You see, Bailey, Marcus is becoming a liability. His ego is out of control. He actually believes his own speeches about changing the world."

Arthur stepped closer, his dark eyes gleaming. "I don't care about changing the world. I care about the four billion dollars the Japanese are about to wire into our Zurich accounts. Once that money hits Helios Labs, Marcus is going to suffer a tragic, stress-induced breakdown. He will step down, and I will take over the restructuring of Thorne Dynamo. But you... you were an unknown variable. Now, you're a solved equation."

"You think this video gives you leverage over me?" Bailey asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper.

"It gives me everything," Arthur hissed. "You will go back to Greenwich. You will play the quiet, loving wife until the deal closes on Friday. If you say a single word to the feds or Marcus, this footage goes straight to the SEC, along with a beautifully forged paper trail showing that you were the mastermind behind the Vanguard Creative Partners laundering scheme. I will ruin you, Bailey. I will make sure you spend your forties in a federal penitentiary."

Bailey stared at him for a long moment. Then, slowly, a small, genuine smile touched her lips. It was a smile that made Arthur’s confidence falter.

"What's so funny?" he demanded.

"You really are a brilliant CFO, Arthur," Bailey said softly, taking her hands out of her pockets. "But you're a terrible detective. Did you honestly think I came here without a backup plan?"

She reached into her purse and pulled out her own phone. It wasn't recording a video. It was connected to a live secure cloud stream.

"Silas," Bailey said aloud to the empty room. "Did you get all of that?"

From the phone's speaker, the gruff voice of Silas Vance echoed clearly: "Every single word, Bailey. Recorded, timestamped, and uploaded to three secure federal servers. Arthur Langdon just confessed to extortion, corporate espionage, and a multi-billion-dollar securities fraud conspiracy on a hot mic."

Arthur’s face turned instantly grey. The smartphone in his hand began to tremble.

"You're bluffing," he snarled, stepping toward her.

"Try me," Bailey said, her voice like ice. "The FBI's Southern District white-collar crime unit has been monitoring my cloud network for the past two hours. If anything happens to me, or if that Japanese deal goes through on Friday, the warrants for your arrest will be executed before the market opens. You didn't catch me in a trap, Arthur. You just walked into mine."
