Chapter 4 - The Sound of Silence

The house was breathtakingly quiet.

There was no television blaring sports commentary in the background. There were no passive-aggressive sighs echoing from the hallway. There was no heavy, suffocating scent of judgment hanging over the kitchen counters.

I walked back down the hall and unlocked the nursery door.

Olivia was still sleeping peacefully in her crib, her breathing deep and even. The swelling on her cheek had subsided slightly under the cold compress, though the faint red mark remained like a badge of a battle we had finally survived.

I pulled a wooden rocking chair up beside the crib, sat down, and rested my elbows on my knees, staring out the window at the quiet evening sky.

My phone—which I had turned back on ten minutes ago—was buzzing incessantly on the nightstand.

Missed Call: Michael (14) New Message: Michael (Ethan, open the door, I’m outside, what the hell did you do to my mother?) New Message: Michael (You’ve gone too far this time, Emily. Pack your bags, I’m filing for sole custody.)

I picked up the phone, unlocked it, and opened our shared family chat.

I didn't type a long, emotional paragraph explaining my side of the story. I didn't argue about legal rights or parental responsibilities.

Instead, I attached three files to the chat:

The official pediatric medical report documenting Olivia’s facial trauma and bruising.

A screenshot of the text message logs from Sarah boasting about hitting her.

A formal legal eviction notice drafted by my corporate attorney twenty minutes ago, barring Michael from entering the property without prior judicial appointment.

Beneath the files, I typed a single sentence:

“Your mother hit our daughter, and you defended her. Don't bother coming home, Michael. The locks are already changed.”

May you like

I hit send.

Then, I turned the phone on silent, placed it face down on the nightstand, and leaned back in the rocking chair.
