The celebration continued long after the gifts had been opened.
Grace hugged her new art set so tightly she refused to put it down.
"It has real paints!" she whispered.
Amanda stood beside Ethan near the refreshments table.
"I don't know how to thank you."
"You don't have to."
She looked embarrassed.
"I've been applying everywhere."
"Three interviews."
"Nothing."
"I'm trying."
"I know."
Ethan reached into his pocket.
"I wasn't planning to do this today."
He handed her a business card.
Amanda looked down.

Community Outreach Director
"My assistant."
"My number."
"My email."
She looked confused.
"I don't understand."
"We're opening a family assistance center next month."
"We need someone who understands dignity."
"Not charity."
"I asked the principal about you."
Amanda's eyes widened.
"You did?"
"She said you've spent months volunteering at the food pantry even while looking for work yourself."
"You helped other families before your own situation improved."
Amanda looked away, fighting tears.
"I couldn't let the children go hungry."
Ethan nodded.
"That's exactly why I'd like you to work with us."
She whispered,
"You haven't even seen my résumé."
"I don't need one."
"I've seen your character."
Nearby, Grace sat beside another little girl who had also received a surprise gift.
Instead of opening all her paint supplies...
Grace split them in half.
"You can keep these brushes," she said.
The little girl blinked.
"But they're yours."
Grace smiled.
"Christmas is more fun when people share."
