Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Plan

I drove to the police headquarters before sunrise.
The city was still asleep, but my mind refused to rest.
One question repeated itself over and over.
Who had been manipulating my family for ten years?
Detective Brooks met me outside the interview room.
"You should prepare yourself," he said quietly.
"Vivian is cooperating?"
"Only because she knows the evidence against her is overwhelming."
He opened the steel door.
Vivian looked nothing like the elegant woman who had hosted charity galas.
Her designer clothes had been replaced by a plain gray detention uniform.
Her makeup was gone.
Dark circles surrounded her eyes.
Yet when she looked at me, there was something unexpected in her expression.
Not love.
Not regret.
Fear.
Real fear.
She folded her hands tightly.
"I never wanted this to happen."
I stared at her.
"Don't insult me with another lie."
"I'm not lying anymore."
"You framed Maya."
"Yes."
"You terrorized our sons."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"...Yes."
"You tried to steal my company."
A long silence followed.
Finally, she whispered,
"That wasn't my idea."
Detective Brooks switched on the recorder.
"Tell us whose idea it was."
Vivian closed her eyes.
"You remember the charity gala eleven years ago?"
Immediately, I did.
It had been one of the first fundraising events after opening our third children's hospital.
Hundreds of guests had attended.
Business leaders.
Politicians.
Investors.
Doctors.
"I met someone there," Vivian continued.
"He introduced himself as Arthur Lang."
The name meant nothing to me.
"He said he represented an investment group interested in healthcare."
Brooks wrote the name down.
"And?"
"He knew everything about you."
"What kind of things?"
"Your expansion plans."
"Your financial goals."
"The anniversary of your first wife's death."
"The schools your sons would eventually attend."
A chill spread through my body.
"He had been watching me long before we met."
Vivian nodded.
"He said you were too trusting."
"He told me I could become incredibly wealthy if I helped him."
"What exactly did he want?"
She swallowed hard.
"Control."
"Of what?"
"Everything."
She looked directly at me.
"Your hospitals."
Detective Brooks leaned forward.
"Explain."
"Arthur worked for people who wanted to buy your medical network."
"You refused every offer."
"So they changed strategies."
"They decided..."
She hesitated.
"...to enter your family instead."
The room became completely silent.
I suddenly remembered something.
The first time I had met Vivian.
At a charity auction.
She had approached me first.
I had always believed it was fate.
Now...
It looked like recruitment.
"You married me because someone paid you to?"
Tears rolled down her face.
"At first..."
"Yes."
The words hit harder than I expected.
"But something changed."
I laughed bitterly.
"Don't."
"I loved you."
"No."
"I did."
"You don't lock children in closets if you love their father."
She lowered her head.
"I know."
Brooks interrupted.
"Who is Arthur Lang?"
"I don't know his real name."
"You met him for ten years."
"Always through intermediaries."
"Disposable phones."
"Private clubs."
"Different cities."
"He never used the same vehicle twice."
"He planned everything."
"Project Evergreen?"
"He wrote it."
"The forged documents?"
"He arranged the lawyer."
"The money?"
"He controlled every payment."
Brooks looked at me.
"This wasn't just fraud."
"This was organized criminal infiltration."
At that moment another detective rushed into the room.
"Sir."
Brooks stepped outside.
Thirty seconds later he returned.
His expression had changed completely.
"What happened?"
He looked directly at Vivian.
"Arthur Lang doesn't exist."
Vivian frowned.
"What?"
"We searched every federal database."
"No birth certificate."
"No tax history."
"No passport."
"No fingerprints."
"He isn't a real person."
For the first time...
Vivian looked genuinely shocked.
"No..."
"That's impossible."
"I met him dozens of times."
Brooks answered quietly.
"You met someone."
"But not Arthur Lang."
Two hours later, federal agents arrived.
Not local detectives.
Not state investigators.
The FBI.
Their lead agent introduced herself.
"Special Agent Sarah Mitchell."
She placed a classified folder on the table.
"We've been investigating this organization for nearly eight years."
My heart skipped.
"You know them?"
She nodded.
"We call them The Meridian Group."
"They specialize in infiltrating wealthy families."
"They recruit spouses."
"Financial advisors."
"Personal assistants."
"Household employees."
"Anyone who can gain long-term access."
I stared at her.
"They destroyed my family..."
"They've destroyed dozens."
Sarah opened the folder.
Inside were photographs.
Some faces were crossed out.
Others remained unidentified.
Then she turned one final page.
My breath caught.
There...
Smiling beside Vivian at a fundraising dinner five years earlier...
Was a man I recognized immediately.
Not Arthur Lang.
Someone I had trusted completely.
Someone who had attended birthdays.
Christmas dinners.
Hospital charity events.
Someone my sons called...
Uncle David.
My oldest business partner.
The man who had helped me build my first hospital.
I looked up at Agent Mitchell.
"There has to be a mistake."
She slowly shook her head.
"We don't think so."
"His real name isn't David Collins."
"It's Daniel Cross."
"He has been working undercover for the Meridian Group for fifteen years."
Every memory I had of our friendship suddenly became poisoned.
Every handshake.
Every celebration.
Every conversation.
The betrayal was almost impossible to comprehend.
Agent Mitchell quietly closed the folder.
"Mr. Hale..."
"We believe Daniel Cross is preparing to disappear."
"We have one chance to stop him."
May you like
"And we need your help."
