Chapter 2 - The Red-Eye and the Reckoning

The call disconnected with a tiny, sharp click that felt like a gunshot in the silent London penthouse.

Marcus Mercer slowly lowered the phone. Outside, the heavy English rain lashed against the glass, blurring the dark outline of the Tower Bridge. For three years, Marcus had tried to walk away from the shadow world. He had built legitimate holding companies, funded children’s charities, and adopted a quiet, fragile girl from a Bakersfield foster home to prove to himself—and to the memory of his late wife—that his hands could do something other than destroy.

But as his daughter’s words echoed in his ears, the carefully constructed facade of the law-abiding businessman shattered into dust.

“They’re going to sell me tonight.”

Marcus turned toward the desk. Standing in the shadows near the door was Victor, his chief of personal security—a towering, quiet man who had served with Marcus in the Special Special Forces before joining his private enterprise. Victor’s eyes were already fixed on his employer’s face, recognizing the sudden, terrifying shift in Marcus’s posture.

"Get the Gulfstream ready," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly vibration that made the air in the room feel instantly colder.

"Sir, the federal travel restriction is still in effect," Victor warned quietly. "The SEC and the Department of Justice have your passport flagged. If we file a flight plan for Los Angeles, federal marshals will be waiting on the tarmac before we cross the Atlantic."

Marcus walked to the heavy oak bookshelf, pulled a leather-bound volume of legal codes from the third shelf, and reached into the hidden steel cavity behind it. He pulled out a black leather folder containing three pristine passports under different names, each backed by active, diplomatic-level government profiles.

"Let them wait," Marcus said, tossing one of the folders to Victor. "We’re not flying commercial, and we’re not filing a standard flight plan. We’re flying as a private medical transport out of a military airfield in Suffolk. Call Colonel Vance. Tell him I’m calling in the favor from Bogota."

Victor caught the folder, his face hardening into a grim expression of understanding. "And Cassandra?"

"Cassandra is about to learn that my father didn't just leave me money," Marcus whispered, his grey eyes locking onto the rainy London skyline with a lethal, focused intensity. "He left me his monsters."
