Chapter 3 - The Breeding Room

Daniel hesitated at the threshold of the hidden room, his hand shaking violently as he reached for the light switch beside the door frame.
"Evelyn... maybe we should wait for the police," Daniel whispered, his courage wavering in the face of the oppressive, terrifying stench emanating from the dark cavity.
"The police are still thirty minutes away, Mr. Vale," Evelyn replied coldly, snapping her flashlight back on and stepping straight through the narrow doorway. "And every second we wait gives her time to get to an airport."
The beam of Evelyn’s flashlight cut through the dark, revealing a room that looked like a nightmare concocted by a mad scientist.
It was a windowless, ten-by-twelve-foot space that had been secretly converted from an old attic storage closet. The walls were lined with heavy, soundproof acoustic foam panels. Resting on long steel folding tables were dozen of glass terrariums, each fitted with heating lamps, humidi-stats, and fine wire mesh lids.
Inside the terrariums were various rotting substrate mixtures—decaying raw meat, damp sawdust, and animal organs preserved in murky liquids. Thousands of flies—blowflies, flesh-flies, and metallic green bottle flies—swarmed against the inside of the glass, creating a terrifying, droning buzz that filled the small space like a buzzing swarm of hornets.
"God above..." Daniel whimpered, covering his face with his elbow. "She was... she was breeding them here."
Evelyn approached the center table. On it lay a sophisticated laboratory setup: glass petri dishes, precision scalpels, bottles of liquid agar gel, and row upon row of small, labeled glass vials filled with clear, thick fluid.
She picked up one of the vials. The label was handwritten in neat, elegant calligraphy:
PHORMIA REGINA — CULTIVATION BATCH #4. TARGET INCUBATION PERIOD: 72 HOURS. NOTES: ENHANCED AGGRESSION VIA METABOLIC STIMULANTS. BONE TISSUE CORROSION OPTIMAL.
Beside the vials sat a leather-bound journal. Evelyn flipped it open.
The pages were filled with photos.
Not photos of Noah... but photos of Daniel’s first wife, Sarah.
Sarah Vale had died two years ago from what the doctors had declared to be a sudden, aggressive form of necrotizing fasciitis following a routine laparoscopic gallbladder surgery.
Daniel stared at the open journal, his face turning completely gray. "Sarah... that's Sarah's medical chart from Mount Sinai."
Evelyn turned the pages carefully. Detailed entries described Sarah’s slow, agonizing decline in vivid, clinical detail:
MONTH 3: Subject Sarah continues to believe the skin lesions on her abdomen are a rare postoperative staph infection. Daniel is entirely unsuspecting. He sits by her bed every night, weeping like a child. The psychological conditioning is proceeding perfectly.
MONTH 6: Sarah’s systemic infection has reached stage 3 necrosis. The medical team is baffled by the presence of flesh-fly enzymes in her blood culture. They attribute it to hospital contamination. She will not survive the week.
CONCLUSION: Sarah’s death cleared. Daniel’s grief has made him completely vulnerable. Next phase: Acquisition of the Vale estate through marriage, followed by the systematic elimination of the heir (Noah).
Daniel let out a strangled, breathless cry, dropping to his knees on the concrete floor of the hidden room. "She killed Sarah... she killed my wife... she infected her post-op incision while she was recovering at home... and I held her hand while she died, thinking it was just bad luck... thinking it was a tragic medical error!"
"She didn't just want your money, Daniel," Evelyn said, her eyes fixed on the final entries of the journal. "This wasn't a robbery. This was a systematic execution. Look at the last entry."
Evelyn pointed her flashlight at the final page, dated four days ago.
FINAL PHASE: Noah’s fracture will be induced via mechanical pressure in the basement. Dr. Sterling will apply the infested cast. Incubation target: 6 days (fatal systemic bacteremia). Upon Noah’s death, Daniel’s psychological breakdown will be complete. Institutionalization will be arranged via Dr. Sterling. Full power of attorney executed.
Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the hidden room slammed shut with a deafening BANG!
The sharp sound of an iron deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the thick wooden door.
"Did you really think I wouldn't leave a secondary security trigger on my study door, Daniel?" Marissa’s voice came floating through the small brass ventilation grate above the frame, cool, mocking, and entirely devoid of mercy.
Daniel leaped up and slammed his body against the reinforced door. "MARISSA! Open this door! Open it!"
"I'm afraid I can't do that, darling," Marissa chuckled softly from the other side. "You see, the Greenwich police department just received an emergency call from my cell phone. I told them that my unstable, grieving husband had a psychotic break after discovering our son's medical condition, murdered our nanny Evelyn in a rage, and locked himself in the attic."

"You monster!" Daniel screamed, punching the door until his knuckles bled. "The police will find this room! They’ll see the flies! They’ll see the journal!"
"Oh, they won't see a thing, Daniel," Marissa whispered, her voice laced with venomous satisfaction. "Because in about thirty seconds, the automatic heating elements beneath those terrariums are going to overload. The acoustic foam on these walls is highly flammable. By the time the fire department arrives, this entire third floor will be a pile of ash... and you two will be nothing more than burned bone."
